What about Coffee Day?
National Donut Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Doughnut_Day) is on the first Friday of June each year and follows on the Donut Day event created by the Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. The holiday celebrates the doughnut (a.k.a "donut") — an edible, ring-shaped piece of dough which is deep-fried and sweetened. Many American doughnut stores offer free doughnuts on National Doughnut Day. In 2009, both independent doughnut shops and large national franchises offered free doughnuts in the United States.
Chris Parry from the Vancouver Sun noted in a satirical column that some Canadians are jealous of the U.S. holiday.

What hoooooooooooooooooooooooole.....
(kerplump!)
The question as to why doughnuts have holes (http://www.coolquiz.com/trivia/explain/docs/doughnuts.asp) has been raised by dozens of bakers over the years, but most agree that the answer to this sticky question lies in the fact that the interior of these fried cakes would not cook fully without a hole in the center. In short, the consistency of a doughnut lacking a hole would be, quite simply, doughy.

So what's with the spellings: doughnut vs. donut. Is one just informal?

Ok...I thought I'd give it a try. It wasn't too hard, and it took less than an hour to mix up, roll out, cut out, and fry them. They don't look that pretty, but they don't taste half bad.

The legend goes that a captain was eating a doughnut on deck while steering his ship, when suddenly a gale hit the boat and, having nowhere to put his doughnut since he needed both hands, he stuck it on one of the wheel's handles.
