When she was eight years old Ashley’s family moved from her ground floor flat to a 4th floor flat. Ash’s mum threw away lots of her daughters’ things away, or gave them away without asking. As you can imagine, Ash & her sister were really upset but they still helped carry the things from the van to their new flat.

While their parents were busy settling in, Ash & Kirsty decided to explore their new surroundings. Just in front of this block was a building site where two other blocks of flats stood and a public house damaged by bombs during the war. They thought it best to save some exploring for another day, but then across the main road they saw a park. Ash & Kirsty headed straight for it.

There was a farm and a play area which was ok, but there was also a map with a pond marked on it so off they went. The pond was medium-sized but the edge was a bit muddy. When Ash & Kirsty finally got bored they passed a picnic area and had a wander through that until they reached the back wall with a gate leading onto another road.

They both decided to carry on through the gate, cross road, and continue walking. Neither of them had a watch on but that didn’t matter. Eventually they got to a canal bridge. They stood on that to look down at the canal. After a few minutes Ash & Kirsty looked at each other then they began to follow the edge of the canal; walking, skipping and jogging without a care in the world.

Then all of sudden both girls noticed that it had gone dark. There were grey clouds which looked as if a storm was coming, so the girls started to wander back the way they had come. But all the gates they found were locked - apart from one. They found themselves on a bridge with a public house across the road. By then it had started raining heavily with thunder and lightning. Their only option was to go to the pub and ask for directions back to the main road alongside the park.

Kirsty told Ashley it would be a good idea to remember the name of the public house.
The girls told their story to the two barmaids and asked if they could help. One of the women agreed to walk with the girls back to the main road until they found somewhere Kirsty could recognise. But it was still raining so they had to wait nearly an hour before leaving. By this time the girls were getting anxious, and were growing increasingly nervous about how long everything was taking.

Eventually one of the barmaids left with the two girls. And after walking for ages Kirsty suddenly realised she knew where she was again.
Both girls politely said 'Thank you' and went on their way.

They were really worried about what their parents were doing and what they would have to say. They knocked on door, the door opened and both were dragged inside. They got a good shouting at then were sent upstairs to get changed for bed and told to wait in the room they would be sharing.

Ash & Kirtsy had been sitting on their bed for quite a long time when all of a sudden their mum and dad stormed in. Both girls got a beating with a belt and with some high-heeled shoes. Then their mum tied them to the bed and just walked out of the room shutting the door behind her.

Ash & Kirtsy spent a long time crying before hearing the street door slam shut. Both girls realised that their parents had left them here tied up for the night so they could go to the pub. Eventually they both dropped off to sleep.

Hmm, I'm not sure what to think of this. I found myself reading it and enjoying it, and I especially like the irony of the last portion where the parents find themselves at the pub. It makes you wonder if the parents were beating the children out of discipline or out of envy for not being at the pub as well.
