Revolte

The grocery store clock ticked slowly that day. It felt more like eight years then eight hours. I work as a merchandiser, going from store to store to reset and rebuild the isles upon aisles of old rusted shelves. Not exactly a preferable way of life for some one like me, who feels sick every time someone buys a new gas guzzling car to add to their collection. Nothing I can do about it though, capitalism is one hell of a vampire.
It was the end of, what had to be, the longest day of my boring life. I clocked in and got my hours for the next week, proceeded to leave the busy building when I stumbled upon heaven herself, searching around for the perfect shampoo. She stood around my height, 5'9 or so, with a slender body, probably only weighing in at 115 or 120 pounds. Her hair was cut short and as black as the night sky with the silver shine of healthy fur. She had a black woven jacket that complimented her gray flower designed skirt. Following her skirt came her legs, perfectly toned and as smooth as a waxed surf board. From her calf down were black boots with white laces.
My heart was won. I just had to have her.
I'm not the kind of man to get nervous around women -typically I flirt more then I mean to- but in this case, I couldn't even walk straight. I stumbled, like a drunken man finishing off his last bottle of vodka, over to meet her. Not one coherent thought came to mind, but that didn't stop me.
“Hello... We haven't met before, I'm Phil.” I said, faking a calm attitude.
She stopped from searching through the shampoo and turned her head towards me. It seemed like slow motion when she turned and every inch of her beautiful, silk smooth face pushed my nerves even further. “Well hello dear, It's nice to meet you.” She said, somewhat in shock.
Silence filled the air until I realized I was so caught in her bright green eyes that I had forgotten to carry on conversation.
“Oh sorry, it's nice to meet you too, are you from around here? I spend most of my time out and about in this town and I don't think I would have missed you.” I said.
“I just moved here, temporarily anyhow. I'm an artist, I like to paint and I make my living off my work. I'm just staying here for a while to get some new inspiration, it's unhealthy for the abstract mind to sit in a box for too long you know.” She explained enthusiastic.
She turned back to find her shampoo and with a smile she plucked out the perfect bottle. “Listen, Phil, it really was nice meeting you but I have to get going now.” She said hurrying to the cashier.
“Wait, there's this new horror movie coming out today. I would really like it if I could take you.” I told her as she walked away.
Stopping in her tracks she again turned to look at me. “I'm not much into movies Phil, sorry.” She explained. “But I sure do love a good walk, how about you meet me at Grover's park tomorrow around this time?” She continued, undeniably noticing the disappointment in my eyes.
She bought that bottle of shampoo and left out the door.
“Wait! I didn't catch your name!” I shouted.
“Alexis, but you can call me Eve, I like being called Eve.” She said with pride.
I couldn't sleep that night, tossing and turning thinking of Eve and wether or not she was really interested, or just felt sorry for me, or even, if she would show up at all. Once the sun came up I was so exhausted from wrestling my pillow that I called my boss and told her I was too sick to make it in. It wasn't a complete lie, I did feel pretty nervous about meeting up with Eve and even if I didn't, it was just too special of a day to spend zoning out on bar codes and price tags.
As if having no sleep and a churning stomach wasn't enough, I must have spent the entire day fixing up my hair and indecisively digging through all my clothes. I trashed my apartment just getting ready for something I couldn't even consider a real date, with some one I never met. I must have looked like a rabbit in a carrot field, so much excitement matched with too much nerve. I was one bad thought away from having a full fledged panic attack.
“Oh Phil, you're a bloody mess. Get a hold of yourself.” I said to myself while falling onto my bed.
I turned my head to check the clock only to see I had about fifteen minutes to get across town to the park. “Dammit.” I whispered to myself. I threw on some old black slip on vans filled with holes, grabbed my keys and ran to my truck. I don't think I've ever driven so recklessly before in my life. I almost crashed into a cop. The guy must have had a bigger crime called in because his sirens turned on and he sped off into the distance.
My crazy driving payed off and I arrived on time. Grover's park was unlike any other, which explains why some one so new to the area knew about it. The grass wasn't just grass, it was more like a field of flowers. You couldn't walk one step without crushing a new daisy popping up from the ground. Even the trees were different, one stood three stories high and the branches wrapped around each other as if it was giving itself a hug.
I saw Eve standing over by an old statue of a women and I walked over to her. She was dressed in clothes so different then the day before. She had on bright rainbow striped knee high socks, blue converse and a a bright red sweatshirt.
She was staring at a plaque on the statue. “There was a time when women could only work for their owners, when giving life was a duty not a choice. But this women, she gave her life, for all of us.” She read. She looked at me and smiled. “Could you imagine? Having so much love for so many people you would never meet, that you would die just so they could have the smile you always wanted?” She asked me. “I don't suppose I know any other way to die.” I replied.
Eve just looked at me for a moment and turned to walk while I followed her. “You know Eve, I wasn't really sure you would show.” I told her nervously. “I mean, and I don't mean to sound pessimistic, but my life has been a hell of a drag for the past few months. Same old job, same old people, day in and day out.”
“Well then Phil, sounds like you need to spice up your life a bit, don't you?” Eve suggested while handing me a wink.”Look, don't get ahead of yourself. When I say I will do something I'm gonna do it, that's all.”
I put my head down somewhat embarrassed and attempting to stray from any eye contact. “Of course Eve, of course.” I said in a shallow voice.
My body was starting to tremble. There I was with this beautiful girl, the only interesting thing in my life, and I was throwing it all away before I even had it. That's one thing about me I never fully understood, I fall in love so easily that I push people away before I give them the opportunity to know me. Eve though, Eve was different, normally I would shun myself once I've given off a bad impression and walk away from the situation, but something told me she wasn't like other women. She was so much more, real.
Eve and I continued to walk through the park, with every step brushing through the rainbow of flowers. “So Phil, do you like cheese?” Eve asked mysteriously. “Um, well, yeah cheese is good.” I replied.
“Well that's good!” Eve said with enthusiasm. She stopped walking and put her hand into her pocket. “You know the best part about cheese?” She asked. “It makes for the funnest pictures” She said, answering her own question. At that moment she pulled out a disposable camera, snapping a picture of me to my surprise. “Now we won't ever forget the day we first talked about cheese.” She said, slipping the camera back into her pocket. “I'm hungry, lets go get something to eat.”
We left the park and trailed alongside the main road to a shopping mall. When we arrived, Eve stopped and slowly spun in a circle, checking out all the stores. “Hmm lets see, lets see. I feel like Subway! Sound good to you Phil?” She asked. “Yeah, that sounds good” I replied.
Truth is I wasn't hungry in the least bit. My stomach was still churning and my nerves made me ill. I couldn't tell Eve that though, I was far too worried she would think of me as a obnoxious fool. Not to say that I'm not, or that she doesn't already think so.
We walked into the subway and I couldn't help but notice Eve had a very strange smirk on that pretty face of hers. “I would like a six inch sub with lettuce and tomato please, hold the dead pig, cow, and whatever other murdered little creature you people think is fun to chop up.” Eve told the lady serving the food. Eve looked at me and smiled “And what will you be having?”. I stood for a moment in shock. “Uh, I suppose I'd have the same..” I said, still in shock. “No no Phil, don't do that, get what you want, not what I want.” Eve told me sternly. I looked at the lady while attempting to keep my eyes out of hers. “I'd like a grilled bacon sub please.” I told her. “Would you like cheese on that?” she asked. “Yeah.” I replied.
Eve's sub was simple to make, it didn't have much on it. She picked it up and we sat at a table near the window while waiting for my sub to be ready. “You see Phil, at a place like this, they can't spit on your food. You can see everything and it would be bad for business if they did. You have to learn to have some fun.” Eve explained. “I have fun.” I replied. “Oh yeah, when was the last time you did something, crazy?” Eve argued. “Well about five years ago I went to the mountains for eleven days with a girl I didn't even know, it was the first time I smoked pot and I was incredibly drunk. We ended up being so messed up that we knocked everything in the cafeteria down.” I told her. Eve had no expression on her face, she just stared at me dumbfounded. “That's the best you've got?” She asked. “Well, I've been stuck in a slump for a while.” I defended. “No slump lasts that long, you're in desperate need of adventure, lucky for you, I am the queen of adventure!” Eve proclaimed while throwing her arms in the air. “Hey your foods ready, best eat up.”
After we ate we headed over to a nearby thrift shop. The look on Eve's eyes was like a lady who's been blind all her life seeing color for the first time. She walked around for a couple minutes silently and smiling, focusing on each and every detail of every shirt, every book, every toy and everything else.
It was probably the most nostalgic experience I've ever had. Me and my young punk rock soul searching for anything I could fit into a paper bag on five dollar Sundays, where anything you can fit into a paper bag only costs five bucks. I used to have that same look on my eyes, astonished by what people get rid of, and excited to have it all as my own. Hell I even bought stuff I had no use for, clothes that never fit me, music I didn't like, if I could get it all for five bucks, it was mine.
Eve walked over to me holding a couple shirts, a pair of pants and a few books. “I got all I want, lets get this and go back to the park, I have a secret to tell you.” She told me.
The walk back to the park was excruciating, I couldn't imagine what her secret could be and the thought of it was killing me.
When we arrived back at Grover's park laid down on the grass and searched for animals in the clouds. “I'm ready to tell you my secret now.” Eve told me. I looked at her curiously. “I want you.” She told me nervously. “You want me?” I replied. “Yes Phil, I want you.” She said.
Needless to say (Though I'm going to say it anyway), I was pretty astonished by Eve's sudden rage of passion. Okay so she isn't exactly the most normal girl you'll find -She seems to jump from calm, to intense and to mysterious as often as a rabbit would jump if he was being chased by a wolf- but I in no way would have expected her to want me out of nowhere like that.
“Why in the world would you want me?” I said partially excited and partially terrified. Eve looked at me for a moment with the most intense stare I have ever seen. “I just want you, I don't know what it is about you but something makes me want to just lay myself on top of you and rock every bone in your body.” She explained. “So, what's it going to be?”
How was I supposed to just randomly have sex with someone I didn't even know? I just met this girl and I know nothing about her. I will tell you, I don't think I have ever had such an emotionally brilliant day. Not one single dull moment, even in the breaths of silence, excitement filled my lungs. So I said what every other man in my position would say.
“When and where?” I asked. “Here, and now.” Eve replied while throwing herself on top of me and slowly kissing up and down my neck. “Eve, I'm not sure if we should do this, not here, someone could see us.” I told Eve sternly. “Shut up Phil.” Eve recoiled.
So again, I said what every other man would say, nothing; and there in the middle of Grover's Park, surrounded by rainbows of flowers, in the now dimming sun, we made love.
I'll never understand what forced Eve into that frenzy of lust, she never really gave me a straight answer, it was always “I just did.” or “'Cause I wanted you.” after a while I just stopped asking. All I know is forty years ago today, I met the girl I would spend the rest of my loving years with.
Eve died a year ago of old age, she never slowed down, never. She would run around the house with paintbrush in hand -every so often painting random pictures of whatever thoughts just happened to pop into her mind- whistling offbeat tunes she made up as she went along. I never painted over those random beauties and sometimes while staring at them, contemplating what thoughts where going through that mind of hers, I swear I can hear those offbeat whistles, as if Eve was right there with me ready to splash on the next thought to come.
It was the end of, what had to be, the longest day of my boring life. I clocked in and got my hours for the next week, proceeded to leave the busy building when I stumbled upon heaven herself, searching around for the perfect shampoo.
