I normally watch television or a movie while eating, but since I want to read more I tried to eat lunch and read at the same time and let me tell you this is one area where tv definitely triumphs over books.

I find reading and eating at the same time takes away some enjoyment from both activities.

Yeah, I read and eat snacks, or drink.

As long as it isn't a messy snack, or something that requires two hands (e.g. sandwich, pizza), then yes, I absolutely can.

There's nothing more satisfying than a snack and a book. I can't say why.

Reading while eating is a bad habit to get into. I don't know about eating while watching tv since I don't watch tv; however, I think watching tv in itself is a bad habit.

No. If I try to eat whilst reading I end up missing my mouth.

Eat -- well, if potato chips, then yes. But one thing that I can certainly do is drink and read at the same time. Water, wine, Pabst, Jack Daniels, cold milk, coffee. . . a good drink and a good read go together quite nicely.

I got hooked on Goosebumps books when I was in the fifth grade, and I almost literally always had one in my hands. Because of this obsession I can now eat, walk, jump rope, brush the dog and weed the garden while reading. I am also quite adept at hiding books in class, behind textbooks, inside of my desk, or pressed against the back of the person sitting in front of me. Also, noise and crowds usually don't bother me. I could probably read a book in the middle of a riot.

 Neely.

It's not so bad with me, but it cannot be messy.

Sandwiches are difficult. Though, maybe if the book is easy and doesn't close out of itself, it might be ok, but then the book is probably a hardback and they cost a lot, so better don't run the risk of messing that up...

But yes, maybe a plate of nice bisquits, or anything that is in nice pieces so you can just eat it with a spoon like soup or so, that is ok, isn't it?

Mind you, the Germans have inventied this potentially marvellous thing: the Leselotte (http://www.leselotte.com/): a cushion, with a cover stuck on it with velcro (?) that keeps you book open. Quite expensive, but potentially very easy so you don't have to keep the book open while eating.

Eating while reading is the only thing that makes books bearable.

Are you kidding?--reading while eating is one of my favourite things.

(It is a solitary habit: having a book at table will irritate your significant other: it kills conversation.)

Read a novel and eat at the same time?

Sure, as long as it isn't The Naked Lunch.

I read whilst eating, drinkng, listening to music, on the bus or train or plane, and during the adverts when I'm watching something on TV, (The ad breaks seem to be getting longer)

Could you read in a house? Could you read with a mouse? Could you read with a fox? Could you read in a box?

Oh yes. Dinner-table reading is what chopsticks were invented for!

I could read in bed, standing on my head, I could read in the ocean, a radical notion.

Oh heavens, yes!! I have six kids--I can read, eat, drink a cup of coffee or a Tom Collins, nurse a baby, break up a wrestling match, have two conversations, check my facebook, and let someone paint my toes and fingers all at the same time.

If I only read while I read--I'd never be able to read....

Yes, I always have. Though I sometimes watch movies or spend time on the computer while I eat. But I get restless if I'm eating by myself and not doing something else too. That's probably rather bad though.

I always love eating but I reading with eating is what arrests me. When I read a serious book, a philosophical one I love eating for I need more and more energy. To read and comprehend a philosophical or difficult book I need extra energy and at times I may drink a cup of tea or a glass of juice and I will at times munch peanuts, cashews etc while reading. I can reading for long while eating at the same time

I'm big on snacking while I read, but I don't typically eat a meal and read any longer. It doesn't bother me to do such a thing, but meal times are typically family time. It isn't very fair to the kids if I'm reading at the dinner table. I love a book with a glass of wine or even just a hot cup of tea. It is soothing after a long day and it works wonders to calm frazzled nerves.

My first thought was of course I can but then I realized that actually I can't. I've stopped trying after my food has got cold so many times because I forget to eat if I'm reading...

Now that I think of it, my books are constantly covered in sauce/dirt/grass stains, but then again so is everything else that I own.

I like that about my books--I like to think of it as leaving a piece of my soul in my book.

It depends on the type of food. I try to avoid soups and chowders especially if the book lies between the bowl and the mouth.
You might consider a sandwich, processed cheese, popcorn, etc.

Apparently I had left a piece of pepperonni in my copy of "The Idiot". When it was discovered, the page was completely saturated in grease.

 Just so long as it doesn't smell.....pieces of one's soul shouldn't be stinky.

That is why I never eat while reading or doinga anything else I end up in a mess.

You might consider putting the book next to the bowl instead of askingfor trouble?

Can I read a novel and eat at the same time? Of course I can.

What I'm finding increasingly difficult is to eat WITHOUT reading something at the same time... Ever since I've been living alone and there has been no one to talk with during mealtimes I've needed something to read with my food. Novels, newspapers, anything, but definitely something.

i don't like it only cause i get crap all over my self and over my book.... like chips- cheesy crap gets on my fingers gets on my book pages. or some oily thing... i like my pages clean... plus its kinda like a dieting tip. don't eat while you read, you wont be constantly looking for snacks.
