I haven't read Nineteen Eighty-Four for many years and don't recall the lovers' names, but what?--in the end they fold under torture and 'love Big Brother'?
Well, I think it's a natural conclusion to the situation presented in the novel: having been put through the meat-grinder, the human beings were eviscerated spiritually and were left as 'hollow men' in T. S. Eliot's immortal trope.
Orwell was a very fine wordsmith of the English language, and extremely prescient in his apprehension of political economy.
His critical concept of 'doublespeak' was lightning-years ahead.
Everything he predicted has come to pass.
BTW, the film version of 1984 (released that year) with Richard Burton and the wonderful John Hurt is definitely worth a peep.

I love the first two acts of the novel. The story is facinating and Orwell is masterful with the english language, however i find the final act of the story to be much weaker than the first two acts. I find the torture and O'Brien talking and all that to be much less interesting than the rest of the novel, however i dont think there was anything else Orwell could have done there. I do love, however, how at the end Winston admits to "loving big brother"
I'd also like to know what people think of Brave New World. To be honest i find that book to be better than 1984 story wise.

I like George Oswell's writing and 1984 is a fabulous book and though what he prophesied in the book did not happen yet the book must be considered artistically and of course thematically superb work

My opinion on the end of the novel would be that it might be my favorite ending for any book.
As with any narrative there is always some vain hope that the protagonist will win out, and he and the girl will live happily ever after or maybe they don't but big brother will be dismantled etc...
Of course I expected the novel to end more like some sort of noble self-sacrifice for the greater good, but history is marchin on anyway, though one man's action may serve to impute meaning to at least his own life and so forth.
I was, however, not expecting what I consider to be one of the most tragic conclusions imaginable. The idea that Big Brother is able to so wholly infringe on the most basic levels of consciousness to the point of actually causing Winston to love big brother, I thought was wonderfully haunting.
The idea of limiting consciousness through the limitation of language is also a theme I really enjoyed in this book. This idea even has support from modern neuroscience

Two of my favourite books, but BNW is a bit shallow next to 1984.

I personally didn't like it. For me it seemed somewhat flat considering all that was going on in the prison just a few chapters prior. I enjoyed the book as a whole but felt that Orwell could've had a better ending.
And no, I don't really have any suggestions on what the ending should've been like because I understand how it difficult it is for one to write an ending. I'm just saying that the ending was my one issue with the book is all.

My favorite classic so far. I thought it has a beautiful tragic ending. The film version is kinda dull to watch.
