I have to choose a short story to read for school, and I'm a little stuck. I was just wondering what your favorite short story is, or if you could tell me of some really good ones that would appeal to a high school student.

Maybe to help you out a bit, I love "The Open Window" By Saki
I like irony :)

Thanks,
Kate

My favorite short story at the moment is definately 'Some Nice Stories, And One Not' by Natasha Soobramanien. It is in an (online) anthology though which costs about 5 British pounds. The story got 2nd in the 2009 Bridport Prize, here would be the website: http://www.bridportprize.org.uk/index.htm

My second favorite story is accessible for free, it's called 'The Crack' by Charles Lambert. http://www.eastoftheweb.com/short-stories/UBooks/Crac.shtml
This one is a bit harder to interpret though. I mean the first one has so many messages and images that one still finds things after reading it four times, but the general message is easier to spot in the first one.

Both stories have some great irony in them.

I love it too, I need to check out your favorite story when I have time. Have you read 'Hiroshima' by John Hersey? It contains an incredibly powerful, ironic sentence. I can tell you but I don't want to spoil anything if you plan on reading it.

Wow--though choice! Favourite single short story?

Possibly either Maugham's 'The Lotus Eater' or 'Mirage'.
