If I was a school now I'd be in the geek group like my children are. I used to get bored in some classes and would read my Little Gem dictionary - a blue one with heights of mountains etc to find interesting words. My mates were impressed by my memory/ appalled by my geekiness that I could recite the dictionary definitions of the rude words.
My pocket dictionary was great. It never stopped a bullet but it fended off boredom.
Reading that dictionary made my Battalion Seargeant Major in the University TA seriously impressed when I told him the height of Everest when he just shot the question at me in a parade.
I was reading Doris Lessing's The Golden Notebook for my course when I used to sit in the cabin when I was doing summer work as a hod carrier.
It was a bit of a contrast listening to the chaps jawing and reading Doris. (Had to read it - didn't like it much, though it had good bits).

BEST EVER!!! That clock is amazing!!
I hear you about textbooks Scher. I get really excited and will start reading them while waiting in line to pay. A couple semesters ago, a complete stranger started howling with laughter at me because I walked out of the university bookstore $600.00 lighter with my arms full of books and said to my friend "That was fun! We should do that more often!" My friends have refused to come textbook shopping with my since. Apparently I'm embarrassing
Let's see...other geekiness...
My roommate and I bought wish and wanted to give them matching names. We went with Bohr and Rutherford, the two scientists who developed the first working model of the atom

I love textbooks too, I've been criticized by more than a few people for keeping mine instead of selling after the semestre, I must have something like 6000 dollars in text books in my room. I don't use them often, but I love having them there whenever I need to review some basic biology or look up something about x virus or y bacteria out of curiosity.
Edit: Although, I have to admit that I'm not likely ever to use my math texts ever again.

I've ditched all of my math and chem textbooks and probably will sell back all my physics ones in 12 days after my final, but I've kept all of my other books even though that's hundreds of dollars in sunk costs. I just get this nagging sense that I might use them someday, even though I probably never will.

Guilty!! I just was too irritated that they would buy my book for $15 and resell it for $85 used, and a new one was $115. I mean it's a BOOK...I can't sell books very easily...I'll give it away to someone who will cherish it first.

We have a decent technical library where I work, but I'm just dreading the day my books become obsolete. I know my physiology, math, and physics stuff is unlikely to become too outdated, but my virology, immunology, and pathogenesis stuff will be outdated within a couple years. I'm dreading the day someone mentions something about biology that I've never even heard of.

Haha, I try to avoid pictures of me in glasses usually, but I think it suits the regalia.
Edit: It just gets added to the list of geeky things about me.
1. A science degree
2. Cherishes textbooks
3. Wears glasses
4. Likes 80s music
5. Doesn't drink, except maybe a glass of wine at special occasions.
6. Total square when it comes to drugs.
7. I insist on using public transit
8. A history of volunteer work with animals.
9. I live alone with cats.
10. Single for pretty much a year now.
Top ten things that make me a geek I guess.

Hmm, let me see, ten geeky things about me. . . ..
(in no particular order)
-Almost missed a very important appointment because I couldn't find my chap-stick.
-Loves cooking international cuisine.
-Gathers a pile of 20 or more books whenever I go to Barnes and Noble or the library. It makes me feel secure and vast, kind of like marking your territory, even though I get dirty looks from the librarians whenever they see me.
- I believe that people give me dirty looks everywhere I go.
- Has had a history of walking into buildings and commenting outloud to the person next to me "ooooh, what wonderful interior!"
- Spends hours at a museum when given the chance. Has had a history of staring into single paintings for time intervals ranging to an hour.
- Dresses quite formally whenever he goes out. (Though I do like mixing things up and juxtaposing my expensive and formal black jacket and fedora with checkered pajama pants whenever I go out. . .though this doesn't happen on a regular basis, it is known to occur.)
- Loves staring at Chinese and Japanese characters.
- Reads love poems.
- Loves "boring" and "old" world literature.
- Reads books in languages I don't understand.
- Loves "boring" and "old" movies.
- Loves silent Russian cinema.
- Is thrilled by the films of Bela Tarr.
- Listens to classical music and jazz constantly.
- Once spent close to a year listening to Beethoven's 9th daily.
- Is terribly feminine.
- Cannot throw a ball properly.
- Once threw a ball which landed in a tree right next to me.
- Once threw a ball that landed ten feet. . . behind me.
- Would be the kid picking daises on the outfield in gym class.
- Would be the kid sitting on the benches reading Homer during gym class.
- Would be the kid the unpopular kids would beat up on.
- Once turned down a totally hot girl (who was also older than me) once at a high school dance because I didn't know what to do.
- Dances like Napolean Dynamite.
- Has been said to run like a girl.
-Has been said to act like a girl.
- Once flushed a really good amount of weed down the toilet in fear that my mom might catch me.
- Was once demolished in a fight with a kid about a foot shorter than me.
- Would choose Woody Allen to play him in a movie.
- Has a habit of commenting on the aesthetic appeal of random things, like wallpaper, tea-pots, elevators, clocks, etc.
humm, that was fun lol.

Totally, I wouldn't even consider dating someone who wasn't a geek. Dinner and an afternoon at the fine arts museum are my idea of a good date, I wouldn't know what to do with someone who doesn't enjoy art or theater. Plus, I think you really get to know someone when you discuss art ;).
I might be willing to throw all those conditions out if they were insanely good looking though.
Edit: Although, this may explain why I don't meet very many people haha.

Hmm I still have some textbooks from college I decided to keep, but then again I dropped out after getting in a fight with my speech teacher. Um.. Buffy geek, right here.
I know EVERYTHING about Buffy (since I was 15). I've prolly watched the whole series about eight times. I've even entered Buffy trivia contests (yes, I'm that much of a Buffy geek).
Ten geeky facts:
1. I own every season of Buffy, and have all of the lines memorized.
2. I wear glasses.
3. I have an 80 BE hunter on WoW (and if you know what that means, you too are a geek).
4. I've been playing RPG's since I was 10.
5. I have never had a grade below B+.
6. I have only had one tan in the last four years.
7. I have only kissed ten boys.
8. For the last two days, I have played a DSi version of Pokemon.
9. I have Rimbaud's "Ophelia" hanging on my wall.
10. I am a member of an online literature forum (hah!).

So, we're basically all geeks? On a literature forum? Who'd a thunk it?
Let's see, some geeky things about me:
- Dr Who is the by far and away the best thing on television, and I've got popcorn and a bottle of wine ready for tonight's episode, featuring the utterly terrifying Weeping Angels.
- Of the five languages I speak, three are dead.
- I can quote vast reams of poetry and drama at will, but don't know how such things as bus timetables or mobile phones work.
- I meet up fortnightly with a group of friends for a Viking evening, where we gather around a fire, drink mead, and recite and translate Norse poetry at each other. And then we have cake.
- My mode of dress has been described as "period Victorian-meets-Oxfam." I also frequently wear (though not at the same time) the following items: fedora, great-coat, waist-coat, bow tie, Panama, sandals and pocket-watch.
- Like others, I wear glasses, though that isn't so much a fashion statement as to prevent me from walking into walls.
- Not that I have much time these days, but I do enjoy a wee bit of RPGing every now and then - it's my guilty pleasure!
- I occasionally indulge in a bit of anime, though I'm very discerning about what I'll watch.
- On a similar note, I have a major love of foreign cinema, and will go out of my way to find obscure films.
- I listen almost exclusively to classical music (Roderigo's Concierto de Aranjuez playing at this moment).
Embrace your geekiness!

5. I have never had a grade below B+.
Haha, except for a couple really hard university courses this is true of me too.
6. I have only had one tan in the last four years.
I've never been tanned period!
7. I have only kissed ten boys.
You have me beat :p
8. For the last two days, I have played a DSi version of Pokemon.
I'm always tempted to buy the new pokemon games, because they remind me of my childhood, but I haven't bought any since Ruby on the GBA.
9. I have Rimbaud's "Ophelia" hanging on my wall.

Awesome! I was once a part of a reenactment society. Dressing up as a Viking was great!

I love Studio Ghilbi Movies!
I'm a total geek. Myself and my house mate are both in our late 20's and we have Doctor Who and Torchwood posters on the walls and pretend we have a pet weevil named Barbara. (dont ask)
I read geology books for enjoyment.
I was an Archaeologist. I start another Archaeology course this month because i just love it so much.
I remember getting excited one christmas because i got a book on nature as a present.
I drink copious amounts of Herbal tea... and fruit tea... I even brought a special tea pot all the way home from Australia.

Maybe I should give getting glasses a serious thought (and get some fashion advice from Loka! :p) to look the part as well.
I loved watching "Buffy" and agree that "Angel" was not half as good as "Buffy". My new favorite geeky TV show is "A Town Called Eureka" (thanks, Jay and Papaya).
Another confession re.text books. I tend to borrow the books of fiction from the library but I always buy my text books (no matter how expensive they are) so that I can write on them freely.

Would it be mean to point out that while we're claiming to be "geeks" I don't think any of us bite the heads off of chickens in our freetime. I mean you never know what people are into but... :)

Well, I'm a geek and a nerd. Google Linux kernel, OpenSolaris, Haskell, Lisp, Python, x86 assembly, half a dozen shells and The Pragmatic Programmer. I wear glasses, hate contacts, and my avatar fits in perfectly.
Nice clock there, Scher!

Dr Who is the by far and away the best thing on television, and I've got popcorn and a bottle of wine ready for tonight's episode, featuring the utterly terrifying Weeping Angels.
Ahhh, I'm so excited for this, since last week's cliffhanger. But since I'm in the States I have to wait a few extra days to see it.
I wanted one of David and geek on it!
And with his glasses? :drool5: I think I found one earlier, so I'll have to go a look it up for you.
Other than love for the Doctor (and really all things BBC), my other geekiness includes:
I'm Asian. In the States, that practically guarantees you're considered a geek. Talk about stereotypes.
My IQ is higher than my hourly salary.
I listen pretty much exclusively to classical music and musical theater (Glee anyone?). I've also been known to write literary-type analyses of my favorite arias/songs. I haven't been to a pop/rock concert of my own free will in years.
I spend more time in the library and studying at cafes than at home.
I've worn glasses since I was 12 years old and fought tooth and nail against switching to contacts until my college years.
I'm a grammar guru (and an annoying alliterator); my parents, siblings, and friends send me their papers/letters to edit, and my boyfriend is always irritated with me for correcting his grammar.
My only marketable skill is teaching (standardized testing techniques and writing). Which is why I'm going back to school. If you think about it, getting a Ph.D. in English is basically getting paid to read. Definitely my kind of job!!
I'm embarrassingly clumsy. While this may not be true of all geeks, it definitely applies to me. I'm the least athletic person ever, and have the absolute worst luck with sports. Even though I understand them intellectually, I'm so unlucky betting them. At my workplace's NCAA brackets this year, I came in DEAD last.
When I play the ponies (one of my ungeekier hobbies), I like picking horses with literary names to win. A few years ago, I picked Steppenwolf to win the Derby (he didn't). FYI, the tactic has NEVER worked for me.
Finally, I'm listing the reasons why I'm geeky. How geeky is that? :biggrin5:

Other than being on a literature forum, and the accompanying bibliomania, I need help diagnosing if I'm a geek. Do the following things count?
I read a book of poetry on a walk today.
I carry a dictionary everywhere I go, so that if I get stuck somewhere I'll have endless reading.
I sometimes know more about historical periods/persons than what's going on in my community and on the news.
I tend to be afraid of fellow teenagers. If I see someone near my age, I run off to talk to my high-school-teacher friend, or to my over-60 aunt.
It's just that there seems to be so much involved in this term, so I'm not sure about its parameters. And any suggestions for an avatar?

All of this counts, therefore, you are a geek  but worry not, since even being a species in danger of extinction, there are still a few. Hence, technically, you are not alone :)

Parameters are very easy to be told: If you don't meet society's regular behavior standards, you are a geek :D As for the avatar, it should be someone you can identify yourself with. Someone of whom you may say "I am particularly similar to that person".

Hahaha, I'd certainly hope so, if my IQ were the same number as my hourly wage I would be catatonic.

I'll take being a geek as a compliment, since I seem to be in good company!
And I guess I do relate to grumpy, self-absorbed, Charlotte Bronte, a little. But I think I've got a little more sense of humor. I hope the readers of the above statement will have too, or I'm toast. :p

I had never heard of this before but I am intrigued... Tapping in the lead, got to check it out....
If you count it as being a geek, I don't drink and I have never been to a club (I'm 24) in school I was called the hat girl cause apparently it's very lame to wear hats...

Damn, I'm late.
Still, I think that I'm both a nerd and a geek, and I have participated in some nerd-offs with some other folks - a game where you take turns to name something nerdy/geeky about yourself.
So. Some points.
*Mathematics. I study it at the university.
*While we are at the subject, I participated on the International Mathematical Olympiad
*And now I help to organize the national olympiads.
*LARP. Serious business. I participate.
*What's more, I have organized four of them.
*And of course, other Role-Playing Games.
*Such as the Serenity RPG I'm participating in.
*Mind you, I like "Firefly" a lot.
*I play go. FYI, go/chess = chess/checkers.
*Mi parolas Esperanton
*While we are at the subject of languages, I speak about five of them.
*And that's not including Java or Haskell, or some other programming languages that I have dabbled in.
*Of course I wear glasses, although, not for a very long time.
*However, about two weeks after I got them, someone I had known for about a year and a half made a mistake by thinking that I had always worn them.
*This forum
*There is a certain DnD system called Planescape where a central location is a certain city that is located on the inner surface of a torus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torus), Sigil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigil_(city)). It's ruler, the silent Lady of Pain, is quite a mysterious character, thought to be by some to be a higher being than the gods of the world.
Now-now, I thought, why is the city torus-shaped? Why be so fancy and, for example, just use the inner surface of a ball. Well, to be just, the torus has got some properties that are different from those than a ball, for example, by the Hairy Ball Theorem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hairy_ball_theorem), you can't comb the hair on a ball-shaped thing without creating a cowlick. I remember reading from the Lostpedia some theories that explained why the survivors couldn't get contact with the outside world, but one character got out - they used the same theorem - if there is some kind of field surrounding the island blocking the way, there must be at least one point, where the field is zero and one can get out.
And then it dawned on me, the reason why the city is torus-shaped - there is a theory that the Sigil is actually just a fancy cage for The Lady of Pain - and those who would imprison her wouldn't make the mistake of creating any entering points, which makes a torus so fitting.
And after thinking that, I understood, how geeky and nerdy is to have a Heureka-moment in a thought that comprises a DnD world, Lost theories and algebraic topology.

(No, no... I am not calling Papaya a geek... but her love of scientists and all things scientific gave me the idea :))
Thank you, Papaya! :hurray:

Being a virtual monolinguist who's not very good at maths, with only a little science - I'm impressed. The good thing about this forum is that I can pretend I'm clever. :D
