How do you "get inspiration"? What you do to get ideas?

Personally I just trot around my room. Or with short stories, I sometimes just listen some music in random order (mainly classical), and invent a plot, at the same time as I listen, and write it up later.

It's been a long time since I actually needed inspiration. My problem now is that I have several stories in mind already that I just need to write. I'm slow at coming up with great ideas for stories, but I'm even slower at wrting them down..

When I decided to write my first story (like 3 months ago), I didn't rush anything or try to force myself to come up with something. I think it just comes randomly. For example, the idea for my newest story occured to me during a train ride, when a person with a really strong smelling parfume sat down next to me, this reminded me of something and I had a great idea to make a story out of it.

For my last story, I included a poem. I struggled to find the right words and themes, so I let myself inspire by music, with lyrics! I listened to a lot of songs and finally was inspired by a Billy Talent song, the poem turned out pretty good I think.

And then there is the story 'you always wanted to write'. I think everyone has such a story. I once read that in order to write a good book, one should try to write the book oneself wants to read the most. I have the themes and some plot for that story ready too, but I'm too inexperienced to start, it will be a novel. So now I'm practising skills with some short stories..

I get inspiration from most things, just experiencing life, but it's the perspiration that really matters. All the inspiration in the world won't help if I can't sit down and get to work on it.

I need neither to "force inspiration". (with the exception of school works sometimes.) I was just curious. :)

I'm a newbie when it comes to writing with the intention of having an audience, but the inspiration for the writing I have done has come from my life, kind of watching the lives of others...and just life in general. A lot of inspiration also comes from the things I read too. But in that case, it seems a little bit more like blog or editorial writing. Who knows where my inspiration will come from once writing becomes a little bit more of a pursuit.

If you look for inspiration it will hide from you.

But if you go around with your eyes and ears (and most importantly your mind) open to new experiences inspiration will always be on your shoulder.

Of course, taking the trouble to write down what this 'inner voice' whispers inside your head is quite different matter. As I have written elsewhere in one of these forums, some people are better at taking dictation than others.

I like to go for a long walk if creativity isn't coming. Just let your body work on auto-pilot, and your mind can just tick over without distraction. Works every time for me.

Mmm, for me finding an inspiration is a bit harder for me if we have a given subject. Other than that, my hand literally finds inspiration, like I think while I write. It may seem weird but actually trying to get something desperately only ends in failure. The more you try to search inspiration, the more inspiration will feel important thus will continue hiding; however, if you ignore inspiration, inspiration will feel neglected then will try to catch you attention :D. (I love my way of writing)
