An iron economy governs us all.
You, who measure each cent,
will have nothing in the end.
While you, who are outwardly profligate

--who spend and spend: money and time
and love--and count nothing lost,
will have hearts that are in balance,
and joy without cost.

Right poets, I'm putting a question out to all of you. If I may be so cheeky as to ask for your thoughts in answer, to reflect in a poem.

Do we really have to get older to get wiser? Why is being childish considered a weakness when it is so much fun?

Who said being childish were a weakness! (well, maybe it does depend on circumstances, after all) for the rest we have no option but to get older...And wisdom? It seems to me that wisdom is DIFFERENT at every age; growing older is not equal with becoming wiser!(some never get wiser, however old....) only DIffERENTLY wise...
Continue having fun - - - life enjoyed is a wise life...
Not much of an answer, but it's half past 3am over here... Be well! Bar

I just came into this....not sure what is a foot. But in regards to "Who said being childish were a weakness! " has never lived their live to the fullest! to be and remain young at heart is what keeps life alive. I think the person who said that is a very sad and lonely soul who wishes nothing but the same for others.

I live to live; I follow the yellow brick road!

hillwalker

I'll reply in rhyme (as instructed?) -

Do we grow wiser as we grow old?
That’s what they reckon; that’s what I’m told.
Ambition and wonder eroded by age,
with no more desire to read the next page.

There’s a lot to be said for the innocent way
That a child raised on love learns to welcome each day;
Relishes novelty, needs to know more,
Thrives on his freedom, and yearns to explore.

So pardon me, please, if I slip back in time
and roll up my trousers in order to climb
That tree in my garden in search of escape.
I’m still just a kid…. I don’t mind the odd scrape.

If one so wished
To return to childhood
One need only make
The mistakes a child would.

But we dislike pain
That comes when we err
And foolishly take
Wisdom’s nightmare:

Wisdom kills youth
The old are thus wise
And the disease of wisdom
Culminates in demise.

Right before death
A truth death begets:
The best moments in life
Are all our regrets!

I hope I got my message out. If not I can explain, I answer both questions but it isn't that easy to see how.

Children dance and play,
“patty cake, patty cake, bakers man”
no care to war and rape,
and to them gay means grand.

Elders sit and stress,
“I hate this, I hate that, damn it all”
focused on stats and jobs,
to them true love means brawl.

Elder meets a child,
“hey kid, don't dance, this ain't a zoo!”
Child looks up and smiles
and the Elder dances too.

All right diz, keep your hair on.

Here it is...

Babies are old souls recycled
when they’re born they know
everything that ever was
or ever should be told.

Trouble is they cannot talk
they haven’t got the gift
and as they grow they undergo
a crucial paradigm shift.

By the time the gift of speech
has been relearned and mastered
the awfulness of modern life just
drives them to get plastered.

With all the ancient wisdom
forgotten or ignored
playing is the best recourse
to stop them being bored.

Finally, when they are old
and memory fills their heads,
before their wisdom gets passed on
they all just drop down dead.

What use then all the wisdom
we learn through all our days?
Isn’t it just far more fun
to go outside and play?

Jesterhead
05-23-2010, 10:40 AM
I like the message of your poem Hawkman, it is well written aswell. The use of wisdom we learn through all our days i guess is that if everyone just went outside and played all the time we would have no government, no doctors, lawyers or scientists etc..

and the first verse reminded me of Socrates when he said that no wisdom can be learned cause we already know it in advance, we just need to remember it.
