View Full Version : I hate it when someone says, " .. our hopes and prayers."

I recall the sentence of Voznesenzki that Simone de
Beauvoir heard at a literary mass meeting in Moscow--
"La poesie, c'est la forme que prend la priere dans
les pays socialistes." (Poetry is the form which pray-
er takes in socialist countries).

I suspect a poet in a communist society is regarded
as a figure central to the health of the body politic.

Thus, the heretical artist is hounded, silenced to
destruction. What society would hound, silence, des-
troy a poet who wrote, " ___________ is in our hearts,
hopes and prayers? "

Every society I know would, that's what-- except the
the garden tending and vegetable canning Ladies for
the Arts Society, Wagon Tongue, North Dakota. Those
ladies would not-- and bless them for it.

What is it I'm trying to say.

No, I'm just not trying, I'm saying.

If I find it annoying should a poets write " __________
is in our hearts, hopes and prayers." How much the more
should I (a fortiori) when sports broadcasters do, and
beyond. I feel it far more than annoying-- I want to
hound, silence and destroy.

I gamble on sports. That mean I watch sports on TV.

This means I have to listen to sport broadcasters. A day
after a NFL player took a horrific blow to the head and
now lies in serious condition at Mercy Hospital, upon
reference, the man behind the mike will say,

"Our hopes and prayers go out to Ronnie Jones and his
family."

I start itching.

Is it intrinsic in the manner of a performative verb,
that the mere saying "our hopes and prayers" that hope
and prayer complete; and the person saying it does not
later, need to hope and pray.

Performative verbs are curious and tricky-- "I claim
this island for the Queen." Saying it makes it true--
the verb claim performs the act and the queen owns
the island.

"I do." is performative.

I wonder-- if saying "our hopes and prayers' does not
qualify as having hopes and saying a prayer when the
person has that hope and says that prayer. I believe
a person can have a hope right then, but I doubt if
he prays right then.

I mean in the booth with two others. I doubt if all in
the booth, the three, start praying, as, if the lead
broadcaster says he has hope and prays, the other two
will too.

I hope and pray this entry will fare well.
