Hayseed Huck

Jean Martin Charcot, Freud's mentor, works with men and
women who suffer from poetry hysteria. At first sensing,
those affllicted appeared to be incapable of shutting up--
even when ordered to do by authorities.
Some could not stop coughing up outrageous claims about
how poems should be written and read, if they are poems
at all
Today, around 8:30 am Hayseed Huck appeared in Dr.
Charcot office for his third hypnotic-counseling ses-
sion. Charcot uses hypnosis to show that the real prob-
lem is a mental one. Under hypnosis he can get the hys-
terics to see how their insane pronouncements about po-
etry suck and how their prose style sucks even worse.
From these demonstrations ordinary people(respectful and
modest poets, all)-- those who liked poetry without all
the snake oil, realize the immediate impotence poetry hys-
teria has over academic and disciplined reasoning.
Gradually, as a result of Dr. Charcot's treatments, more
and more poets who love poetry come to realize the harm
poetry hysteria can cause-- especially around poets. Char-
cot says the poetry hysteric may say things without empir-
ical justification and without a priori anamnesis--
and without support from the great literary critics--
but knowing full well the real reasons they are poetry hys-
terics is to fill the void left by not having a treehouse
or a dog or even one Cub Scout merit badge.
Charcot also shows how the P-hysteric consciousness is
full of voices that tell the patient how great they are,
how magnificent, how they are 'poetry-lights' leading
the ignorant, common, poetry-loving poet out of the wild-
erness.
Self-references to their own works is made with such a
degree of pride that one wonders when the 'fall' will
come, as it must-- if there is justice in the world.
Charcot came away from one session with a poetry-hys-
teric by muttering, '... the swinishness."
