Ashes rise up
from the Earth
an ocean and a lifetime
from Katyn Forest

Resurrected
They drift home
to Poland
to cover the shoes
of those who search
in vain

for the well worn
path of ghosts

Inspired by Nature, its other face though, the poem transcends to another side of it – invisible one, the one that is imagined by the poet in his effort to give the occurance its humanly coloured reason, cause. Conscientous, succinct, distinct. I am impressed.

A very poignant piece - so much sentiment and suggestion in just a few words.
One worth reading more than once.

I enjoyed it. Thank you.

Hack, have you just seen the movie or is Poland of a special concern to you?

Your poem says it all about the massacre, beautifully too.

N ow finally a little more than a spot on the map
K atyn spits out its secret's clotted blood
V ile, atrocious do not adequately describe where
D eath was Poles' methodical mass slaughter.

I agree with everything said so far and I find you poem deeply moving. Especially in the light of the recent loss of the Polish president, who, having escaped the massacre at the time, finally seems to have been claimed by it, having lost his life on his way to commemorate it. Very sad. H

This one is beautiful, and I think has already served its purpose well and will continue to do so! thanks for the insight.

For those who may have missed it, I presume to point out that the initial letters of your last 4 lines spell out NKVD, "The People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs," which was responsible for the massacre of some 20,000 Poles during WWII, the cream of the intelligentsia, a crime that for a long time the Soviet Union claimed had been committed by the German army.

Prince that's right, thanks for noticing and explaining, but I feel I am responsible for the confusion here, with my own four cents that fell out of my pocket... I apologize about that, hack - here is YOUR BEAUTIFUL FINE POEM again:

It is certainly true that the NKVD was
responsible for carrying out this atrocity,
although the policy came from the highest
levels of the soviet, as did the decades
of obfuscation that followed. Even now it
is denied it's true name, a crime against
all humanity, and a war crime.
Thank you all for your kind inspiration.
