View Full Version : A potentially enjoyable little game...

I have an idea that may or may not be established, but let me know if it sounds like a fun thing to do. Here's the game: A book is voted on to be read, and whomever wishes to participate reads the book along with everyone else. And as we read, we discuss the events that occurred and predict events that may occur. It would be nice if we read at the same rate (e.g. 1-2 chapters per day) so that the discussions would make sense, but I don't know how in the world everyone would refrain from reading ahead, cheating via sources such as Internet, etc. But no biggie, it's just a fun thing to do to get others reading books they've never read before. And it's not terribly difficult to check a book out of a local library or, if you wish, buy one from a Books-A-Million. But to some people this might not be enjoyable and feel more like mandatory, scheduled reading, so it's just an idea right now. Let me know what you think and what book we should start with, if we indeed start at all.

We did this at high school- a group of you would each read the same book, you'd set an amount that the group had to read for each session.
However most people would skip ahead.

I like this idea. I think maybe the book should be short-ish. 150-300 pages. So we can complete the project in a matter of weeks.
Also, if we were to put in our recommendations, a Herman Hesse novel would be mine.
Again, good idea.

There is already a Book Buddies thread - currently reading The Alienist. I believe there are are other book sharing threads going on as well. And of course, there is the Forum Book Club. I don't suppose the mods would have any objection to a similar thread being created?
If enough of these threads were to be running at the same time, maybe they could be moved to the Forum Book Club section as a sub-forum?

I vote for The Secret Agent, by Joseph Conrad. :biggrin5:

So far we have one vote for a Herman Hesse novel and one vote for The Secret Agent, by Joseph Conrad. And yes, MrRegular, we will definitely try to keep the books fairly short. Any other suggestions?

Alright, guys - excuse my ignorance of the Forum Book Club on this web site. It's pretty much the same thing I'm trying to do. :) So we'll just put this thread to a silent end....
