Do you enjoy the unexpected turn of events that are presented by M. Night Shyamalan. There are other writers/directors that also produce such stories. Please share your thoughts and love for these books and movies. Here are a few movies that I loved, what are yours?

The Sixth Sense (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167404/)

The Village (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368447/)

The Others (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0230600/) (though not by M. Night Shyamalan)

I liked the Sixth Sense, but the others. . . .meh.

I tend to agree with this, Unbreakable was so-so, but his other films so far haven't been that great.

There is a little known movie that is simply wonderful; rather different from his other works, "Lady in the Water"

The Sixth Sense was one of those very very few films that had one of those twist endings that changed the reality of everything that had happened before (which was quite trendy back in the late 90's) and made it actually work, both emotionally and within the context of the narrative.

But other than that, I really cannot stand his consistent use of twist-endings, the most overrated narrative technique ever made.

Though you did mention The Others which I really really liked. Very creepy and when compared to other modern-day horror films, it is truly a classic.

Alejandro Amenabar is an accomplished director. His movies: Tesis, Open Your Eyes, The Others and Mar Adentro are all superbly crafted pieces of cinema. Night proved to be a one-trick pony, unfortunately. His first movie was definitely promising.

Oh yes, I had forgotten that Amenabar had done Open Your Eyes. Yes he is definitely a fine director.

Out of coincidence, yesterday after reading an essay by Slovenian philosopher Zizek where he mentioned The Village and its allegorical themes I suppose I should see it.

Personally, I wish M. Night Shymalan would give it up now. It's getting old, the same way that Jim Carrey's act got old after Ace Venture, Pet Detective.

The Sixth Sense was great back in the day, but enough is enough.

Oh, and I agree that yes, The Others was good in the same way the Sixth Sense was good.

The Village isn't all that original, I swear I've come across the exact same story previously in my readings of crummy 50-60s sci-fi.

Anyway, his next movie is an action film based on Nickelodeon's Avatar cartoon, so it should be a big departure from his past work.

I have to say that I thought The Others was terrible. Apart from having a really hackneyed twist, the set up was so painfully laboured. On the other hand, rather that load of rubbish than The Village which was the worst movie I saw that year (though Signs ran it close). It made no internal sense at all - it was massively inconsistent and tortuously contrived. I giggled all the way through it - and I wasn't the only one in the theatre doing so.

I liked the concept of The Village, but thought it was painful to watch as it was so poorly executed and really forced and contrived. I liked the Sixth Sense, but didn't think the end was all that unexpected, as the first time I watched it, about twenty minutes in, I turned to my partner who had seen the film before and said,

SPOILER ALERT!!!

"He's a ghost, isn't he?"
