Not at all sure I can decode the whole of this but the brilliant playfulness of it is irresistible. Thanks.

(For a man who is truly sane
Can terrorize Time, halting his wane)

I daresay you set a pretty high bar for sanity! Terrorizing time is certainly a skill I'd like to pick up, in my spare time.

I appreciate this poem. I think I understand what it means. "Me" is the philosophizer or perhaps the person lost in some world of thought. "I" is the romantic or the aesthete. "He" is the lover; or, to use somewhat less flattering terms, the philanderer, the womanizer. And "Bret" is the pragmatist, focused on the here and now.

All of these compose "we." Each of us is either me or I or he or Bret. And perhaps there is something of each in all of us.

Wow Dante, that was a pretty impressive interpretation of the poem. Your explanation resonated with me immediately.

I quite like the way this poem is set out. And the way it comes together at the end. It must have taken a long time to write.

Absolutely love it! A bit of what I would imagine would happen if ee cummings wrote As I lay Dieing.
