Not sure where to put this thread but...

Can anyone suggest some good publishing companies/ websites where they have nice hardcovers of the classics.

I like Everyman's Library and some of the Scribner Classics Hardcovers but beyond those I am having a hard time locating classic collections or nicely bound hardcovers in general. Additionally, some of the books I want are not part of these two collections.

Thanks

Not sure. I've often come across some wonderful hardback editions in good second hand book stores, but I don't know about new editions. I'm not that much of a fan of hard back editions; a bit too clunky on the move.

The Folio Society produce nice looking hardbacks, but they cost a fair bit, and I'm not always sure of the credibility of their editors.

Barnes & Noble (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/discount-books-bargains-classics/379001146/?cds2Pid=17978&linkid=1507207) puts out some very nice leather bound hardcovers. I got a set for Christmas. They look beautiful and are of good quality. (The only downside is the very thin pages with the bigger books, but that's unavoidable.) 17 dollars a book isn't half bad, either, considering what you're getting.

what makes you question the credibility of their editors?

The Easton Press leather bound classics, the Folio Society, and The Heritage Press. They are all for sale with prices from $10 through several hundred dollars. I am developing a web site to sell these, but if you send a personal message with you requirements, author and title, I will respond with book and price. Payment is made via Pay Pal to US customers only. These all come in slipcases and are mostly in Mint or like new condition.

Rores, I recommend you locate dFloyd if he doesn't show up in this thread. He is a collector and has a particular set, I forget which, about which he speaks very highly.

As far as my own collection, I usually try to do Everyman editions or American Library if it is available. They are both very nice, durable and affordable. I pick up Reader's Digest versions if I find them for a few dollars, but I don't pay much more for them. A word of advice: stay away from the International Collector's Edition. They have an almost acceptable antiquated look about them, but they fall apart very quickly. I also have found that Modern Library's quality seems to have dropped off in their more recent publications.
