I'm looking for literature that features the perfect pastime: fishing.

My list of stuff I've read thus far includes the following:

The Compleat Angler (Walton)
The River Why (Duncan)
A River Runs Through it (Maclean)
The Founding Fish (McPhee)
All of Thoreau's Works
The Old Man and the Sea (Hemingway) -- over-rated.

What other titles would people recommend? Oh, I'm more interested in work that deals the the art of angling not commercial fishing, generally, but I'm always ready to make exceptions to the rules.

Trout Fishing in America :yesnod:

Low-brow hippie fishing. I think this is the 3rd time I've recommended this book :D

If you could, I'd recommend giving Islands in the Stream by Hemingway a fair try. Best, most descriptive fishing novel I have ever read - and it might just make a Hemingway fan out of you.

I'm going to read Isac Walton's The Complete Angler since it has become a classic.

I don't have transportation to the library, but if I did, the first book I'd check out is:
The Flounder by Gunter Grass. (Umlaut over the "u" in "Gunter.)

I'm trying to think of something with Twain, it seems something that he would have written about (probably sardonically).

Comedian,

You may be interested in James Whitcomb Riley.
I recall leaving you one of his gems; "Down Around the River", in your birthday thread:

I'll let you know if others come to mind.

Okay, know this is completely unrelated, but I think I sense somebody who likes Toilers of the Sea. Its one of my favorites.:D

The River Runs Through It has a lot of fishing, though not actually as the plot. Never read it, but I saw the movie once.

Hey Gillatt -- Thanks for reminding me. I had totally forgotten that recommendation. I'm getting a hankerin' for summer, which naturally turns my thoughts to fishing. I'll head over to Amazon.

Comedian,

"Down Around the River" is all I could recall when I posted that at work. (You didn't hear me say that), Now that I am home and I can pull out my Grandfather's 1888 copy of Riley's works Vol. IV and what do you know? I found a couple more right up your creek;
"Kissing the Rod" and "Bells Jangled"

I have a feeling that you are the type of person that would enjoy much of Riley's work including those outside the topic of fishing.

Moby Dick! now there's a fishing story.
Perhaps Peter Benchley and "Jaws"? (I don't think fishing with an M1 Garand is what you had in mind)
