After the Cross

A star shone above the place where I was born,
Leading strangers from afar to my home.
All the Scribes and the Priests read The Scrolls, now old and worn—
That told precisely the way The Messiah would come.
Why was it, do you suppose, that sinners eyes could see
The Revelation of A Savior, and the Scholars could not?
I was everything The Prophets had said that I would be—
But being blinded by their traditions they forgot.
Gazing down upon the throng in agony from upon the Cross,
I could only see my Children gone astray.
I cried: “Father, forgive them!” I was glad to pay the cost,
For I had came to be the Truth, the Light, the Way…
But had there only been one person in this whole world filled with sin—
I would have gladly died there upon that Cross of Shame for him…

Those bravely declarative final two lines put a whole new light on the mystery of the crucifixion! Bravo!

Interesting narrative and point of view that shines a light on some sincere religious sentiment. Thanks for the illumination.

Strong poem, Pen. And good read on this Good Friday. This rhetorical question really struck me?

Why was it, do you suppose, that sinners eyes could see
The Revelation of A Savior, and the Scholars could not?

And that closing couplet is awesome!!!

But had there only been one person in this whole world filled with sin—
I would have gladly died there upon that Cross of Shame for him…

Well done. :)

One from the archives arrives and thrives.(© 12/14/97 I see.)

I was everything The Prophets had said that I would be—

Writing in the first person has its advantages and I like this personal touch, Pendragon.

I have a soft spot for verse in which the speaker is someone other than the poet himself or herself. The choice choice of this particular Someone is brave, indeed.
Your closing couplet is masterful.

as I'm sure you've heard, the final rhyming couplet is beautiful.
