Hoping to get some help from you erudite bunch..
Does this ring a bell with anyone-
An American novel ( well regarded- novel of the year in various polls..). Written 57/58...Theme.. a quest..with usual crypric clues.. last scene.. Hero baffled and gives up outside a cave/ wood? which is festooned with wild clematis--which we know also as Old Man s Beard.. but hero doesn' - so 'fails' in quest///
Any ideas?
