Need help identifying a poem (possibly by Kurt Vonnegut)

I need help identifying a poem. I believe it's by Kurt Vonnegut but I could be wrong. A friend shared it with me but I lost the link. It's about a soldier/boy who returns home and sees the girl he's always liked/loved. But she is now engaged or about to be married. She says something along the lines that he's too late and she can't love him. But he says he knows and doesn't care but doesn't leave. I believe it takes place in a field. At the end she decides to stay with him.

I figured it out. It's Long Walk To Forever by Kurt Vonnegut. It's not so much of a poem as a short story/essay.
