I'm feeling myself live up to the title of 'grumpy old man' thanks to brother C's over-rated thread, so I thought I would attempt to redress the balance.
Under-rated: opera, road-bikes, Cox Orange apples, Quark :D, tap water, teachers, French bread, plain vinaigrette dressing, hand push mowers...

I agree to almost the whole list, special thanks for mentioning Cox Orange Apples :), and want to add: sparrows, meadows as opposed to lawn, daisies, Frank Zappa, bird song, and silence.

The game of go (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(game)).
The intellectual game par excellence, yet it is rather unknown in the West.
Each time I see chess being referred to "The greatest strategy game ever" I wonder if the person speaking has ever played go.
Don't get me wrong, I like chess and think it is a very good game, yet when you see a situation where a better game is less popular you get the feeling of underratedness.

Oniw17

Really?
Well, by elitism,I guess I mean more of a perfectionism, like Socrates in the Republic. And by eugenics I don't mean weeding out the people with traits that we don't like, just preventing ailments that no one wants to be born with in the first place. Meritocracy is practiced in the school systems, the military, and almost every career in existence. Even in literature, the writers who write well receive more acclaim and are more successful. Mindgames are an essential part of life, at least for me. That's how I communicated with both of my parents growing up and that's the way I've always communicated with almost everyone who I wasn't being extremely and apathetically direct towards at the time. I see life as a series of mindgames, and if you don't see that, we just have a difference of opinions that can't be solved. And by cruelty, I meant just that type of straight-forwardness that has been my only other means of communication. I'm not sure how to explain it exactly, it's sort of a loving cruelness. You'd have to see me interact with my younger siblings to understand it, they see it the same way I do at least. I'd have thought someone would have guffawed at the fact I put social standing up there before that, which I really did because putting importance on social standing brings about ambition.

ME......:p.
I say that at the risk of sounding conceited, but I mean it in the sense of doing the job I do, which is underrated by many people. Okay, I'm not a life-saver in the emergency sense, but shocking as it may seem to those on a site like this, who love literature, a lot of people out there in everyday land, don't appreciate how important books and reading are, and a lot of those people should know better :yesnod: I'm griping as I am currently trying to get a regrading at work, as my job is very lowly graded; "loving your work, but although you're a graduate with tons of experience, don't dare to think you should expect more....." I'm paraphrasing how I interpret the situation. The number-crunchers, who are very well-paid thank you very much, have never set foot in a Library or read a book, and have no idea about my job. It's so depressing to think that they are the ones in power....:bawling:.
So as you may gather, I think Librarians and Libraries are vastly underrated.

Oh, absolutely. Life is much better if you see the humour in it.
More underrated stuff:
- Knowing how to do things for yourself (make medicine, grow your own food, do your own taxes, etc.)
- Jews (I mean really, can you think of a group of people who have collectively been through more hardship and yet continue to flourish?)
- Canadian aborigonal women (I'm telling you, they get a lot of crap)
- Rabbits as pets (contrary to popular belief, they really do have a lot of personality)
- Short fingernails (long nails might look pretty and come in handy when you want to open a can of something, but more often than not they get in the way)

Beans - out of a tin
Paul, could you tell me what I need to know about trying this? I'm wondering if simply buying a can of, say, black beans, dumping them in a bowl, and then microwaving them would be all there is to it--or is it good to add some spice or something? It seems like a lot of just beans. Also, are some beans better than others, when it comes to eating them out of a tin? Where should I start?
BTW, you will soon be able to buy a Chipotle (http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20091117005462&newsLang=en) black bean burrito in London, and that will blow your mind, I assure you, if you end up there sometime and give it a shot.

Really? Not to play the devil's advocate (heh, sorry; I really couldn't resist the play on words) but it seems to me that people really never shut up about love and their god(s), even if they don't even understand what those words mean. We've got a whole holiday dedicated to "love," and where would the greeting card business be without THAT ideal? Likewise, how much crap have people started over religion? How many people have died for it? How many arguments have occured, either in favour of a certain branch of religious theory or of the existance of religion in general? Love and religion aren't underrated by any standard, they're just things that you guys happen to value.
Aaaand I know it's futile to even post this since neither of you really care anyway. It's just late, I'm sleepy and I couldn't leave that hanging there.

I wasn't talking about religion. Most of the crap that has been started concerning religion was started because someone forgot all about the 'love' end of it in the first place. The crusades were not fought because of love, they were fought because of pride and glory...and that's just one little example. Arguments occur, not because of love, but because people feel the need to be right. Leaving the whole 'religion' thing out of it, I stick with the original part....love is underrated.
