What is the deal with Nicholusha's strange dream on the last page and his comments afterward? My translation quotes him as saying "All will know me, all will love me, all will praise me?" Is he trying to suggest that this fictional character became Czar Nicholas the 1st? Strange ending. Doesn't seem to tie in with anything.

Is it not suggesting that the cycle of life is beginning again and that he is in a sense his father's son - that's what Prince Andrei hoped for earlier in his life to - fame, renown etc. It fits with the epic scale of the book - like Natasha Rostova going from a vivacious, naive girl now a matronly type character, the Countess now elderly and withdrawing herself from life in preparation for death... It's about the passing of time and now a new generation with new hopes is coming but really they're not so different from the last.
