View Full Version : Jazz of the broken

A full moon night,
doesn’t it seem rather soothing
when sipping with loneliness in a near-empty bar.

Scotch on the rocks,
clichéd for late-hour drinking
as misery flows in jazzy tones and rhythms of afar.

Such scenery brings to mind the scaring memories
filled with saddening cries and fears never shattered,
Dreamier sights forever swallowed in unseen tears
while tired eyes shut slowly to saxophones awakened.

A sight for memories,
where is the mind venturing
when pondering souls gather like in movie sets.

An unfading capture,
where are cameras vanishing
as batteries shut when eyes go on watching regrets.

Letting the soft serenade gallantly travel all around
violent echoes of past times settle down for a drink.
Countless sips drunk; it takes a nap without a sound
As a smile voyages softly to those still able to think.

Closing time,
it is of no importance with a little bliss
finally settled in within this rhythm of jazzy delight.

A last shot,
to remind ourselves of those we all miss
as praying notes play one more time for a broken night.

The title is a grabber and the whole of this has the seedy feel of a painting by Winslow Homer or the wonderfully lachrymose "Last Call": http://my.liveireland.com/forum/topics/irish-poetry

a boozy jazz scene will always alleviate the sorrow, or maybe just a late night stool in a low lit bar.

I kind of dig this poem and the classic scene it paints. I think it is very easy for the bar fly to relate to these feeling. Cheers.

thank you for the comments! First ever hehe! Yes these jazzy scenes are often a bliss to me! I sort of find beauty in sadness sometimes, kinda what I tried to picture

Hi Mf,

On the whole I really like the atmospheric portrait you paint. One thing though:

S2 L2 "filled of saddening..." you can have "filled by" or "filled with" and drunk would be better than drank - S6 L3.

apart from that, spot on - thanks - H

Thank You Hawkman!

I took your advice to the letter and changed them. It has a better rythmn to it now. Thanks so much :D
