Okay call me grandpa Daniel but I'm close to oblivious when it comes to contemporary music. My sister listens to a lot of rap and I never fail to be appalled by the levels of misogyny presented in many of the songs. As some of you may know, I'm a big jazz fan and of course I practically worship Beethoven and Mozart. I've been digging alternate rock for some time, as well as 80's rap, and of course I love everything from the 60's and most of the 70's.
So I'm a pretty opened-minded guy when it comes to music, and despite the fact that I hate the attitudes of most of the mainstream in the music industry (which practically seems to promote the douchebagness of guys like Kanye West) I've decided to lend my ear to some more mainstream contemporary music just to see what I've been missing in the 2000's.
I must say, it was like a revelation. M.I.A.'s Paper Planes was almost like a reflection of the entire 2000's, something I've never seen done as well by any work in any of the arts of this decade. Then there's Gnarls Barkely, who's Crazy is an absolute testament to the fact that funk reached its heights in the 2000's, not seen at least since the likes of James Brown. Then of course there's Kanye West who has some serious egomaniacal problems, but whom musically is a genius.
So what say you? Any songs from the 2000's you love? any that are, dare I say, mainstream? I must say, Paper Planes was such a magnificent epiphany and such a perfect and powerful representation of almost everything in the 2000's that I must say that it is IMHO the greatest song from this era.
