You are in your final year of what? University? As an English lit major? If so, I can't imagine you would need help coming up with an idea for a thesis. There must be something you are dying to read, delve into and analyze.

Ahh spring... and the trolls are out. I'm getting really sick of this, why can't new members who joins actually contribute rather than just ask us to do their homework for them.

On the other hand, if one of them would like to finish my 4 000 word children's literature essay I'm currently working on for me- I'd be glad to help them.

Don't forget: proper spelling, grammar, and MLA format please.

Helping someone come up with ideas for a thesis hardly counts as doing their homework for them.

Sean> It might be a good start to tell us about the era and books you are interested.

If you're in college or uni I'd recommend talking to your adviser about this...

im in college doing a hummanities degree, and i want to do an english thesis. i want to read crime and punishment i just finished reading notes from the underground and im really interested in reading that. Has anyone got an original idea for a thesis title to do with this book, or any other original ideas.

surely the point of an original idea is that you come up with it yourself?!

if someone else gives you the idea, it is no longer original is it?

good luck

I have to say I agree, asking someone else for an original idea means you deserve to fail.

This sounds very vague. You want us to come up with a title without even knowing the subject? I assume you're an undergrad. What's the scope of this thesis - how large? Plus Crime and Punishment is not even an English novel. Unless you're doing a thesis in comaprative literature or Russian literature, then i can't see how you could do that novel.

Russian literature is often tragicomic, although Russian literature is often perceived as very depressing. You could look at this balance of tragedy with comedy using Dostoevsky, Nabokov (I'd suggest Lolita), and a Chekhov play (maybe Uncle Vanya?).

You should be talking to your thesis advisor.

I can give you another idea in the world of crime and punishment.

theres a book by Emma Goldman called "Anarchism and Other Essays". It's not really that long http://xroads.virginia.edu/~hyper/Goldman/toc.html but for college and politics theres not much you can do better. UCLA for example has an entire dedication to her, but most people wouldn't know or expect that due to popular idea of what both anarchism and feminism are.

I appreciate the fact that you value the forum members literary opinions but I really believe that you need to come up with a thesis subject yourself. Writing a dissertation is a very personal thing which requires 100% focus. Take it from one that knows, you're going to have to live, eat and breathe your dissertation so make sure you choose a subject area that you really feel passionate about. Good luck! :rolleyes5:

seanyboy, no offense, but if you write your essays the way you write your posts here, maybe you should get some help with your grammar before you write your thesis.

In his defense, grammar/spelling is the last thing on my mind when posting to an online forum...especially after writing all day for professors.

Absolute agreement. Someone who is at the point in their university career where they are considering the topic of a dissertation should not need to get suggestions from people on a site like this. I can see discussing it with your advisor, but you should have in mind something you'd like to read, research and write about. It is a personal thing and includes your personal development and growth as a student of literature and as a thinking person.

Seanyboy,

I absolutely agree with jeanesmith and myrna. Plus, as a general rule, you should master the original language of the text you're writing about. So, unless you know Russian (or unless you are very willing to learning it), I think you should not choose Dostoievsky.

When I was choosing a theme for my thesis I stumbled upon Umberto Eco's "how to make a thesis", which helped me a lot. I think you'll find it useful.

Good luck!
