He does not love me; I know he tries
But I look at him and he cannot meet my eyes.
He says he is faithful; he insists there's no lies
Then one day he quits me; what a surprise!

'Yes, yes, that was very nice.
Now let's cut it down to size
We must analyse, analyse'

'Clearly this is a metaphor
Subtler than ever I've seen before.
When she means 'he' she talks about luck.'
'Now I get it- I was quite stuck!'
The ardent student cried.
'The man is an embodiment of female aspiration.
The cryings out and the desperation.
Then to the anger and frustration.'

They dug in further, over-analysed.
As the words slipped away and the poem died.
