As the front door opened, Emma was greeted by a forgotten familiar face. They each paused momentarily, as though remembering that they recognised each other.
“Hi Steven” she said, hastily ushering in her guest. He stepped inside the house, wiping his feet on the welcome mat before cautiously accepting a polite embrace from his host.
“John is in the kitchen, you should go through and say hello.”
Emma shut the door behind him as he went into the kitchen to find John, standing there. Steven nodded in acknowledgement, before offering a handshake.
“It’s been a long time. You’re doing well for yourself I see. This is a nice house you’ve got.” Steven said.
“Thanks. Was the journey okay then?” said John.
“It was okay, yeah. There was a fair bit of traffic on ... but yeah it was okay.”
“Why don’t you two go into the living room and I’ll bring in some coffee” Emma offered as she made her way in from the hallway.
“Sit down, make yourself at home.” Said John, as Steven looked around living room.
“Nice house you’ve got here” said Steven as his eyes glanced towards the old family photographs that were placed on the mantle piece, alongside the ceramic ornaments and a small wicker bowl that contained keys and loose change and other miscellaneous items.
“Remember when dad brought that thing home? Mum went nuts!” John said as he noticed Steven looking at one of the pictures, which was partially obstructed by one of the cards that lay on top of the mahogany surface.
“Yeah,” said Steven, smiling. “She barely spoke to him for a week. I think he slept on the couch for a good while after that.”
“Yeah, when she’s mad at him ... “ said John as he stared at the picture, before becoming distracted by his own thoughts.
“She always made sure he knew when he did something wrong” Steven said as Emma made her way into the living room with the coffee.
“There you go. It was two sugars wasn’t it?” Steven nodded.
“So how long are you staying for?” asked Emma.
“I think I’ll just stay for the service, then drive back tonight.”
Emma sat down next to Steven on the couch as the room went silent. She crossed her legs and straightened her black skirt as John continued to stare at the picture that had held his attention. She looked vacantly at the cup that lay on the table in front of her as she touched her wedding ring.
“I like what you’ve done with the living room,” Steven said as he turned towards Emma, who continued to focus on the cup.
“It’s very nice.” He continued. “It’s a nice house. You’ve done well for yourself.”
“What time do the cars get here?” Emma asked John, who continued to stare at the photographs.
“Erm, one I think.” John replied, following a brief pause as he considered the question. He picked up his cup and took a sip, prompting Steven to do likewise. They sat silently, each lost in their own thoughts. A fly that had been perched on the windowsill throughout, took off, staggering aimlessly in flight before seemingly throwing itself against the window.
“Nice coffee Emma.” said Steven.
The fly walked along the windowsill, dazed. It paused before making another clumsy attempt at taking off.
“Lovely coffee.” Steven said.
