Mona Lisa Smile

I was lost within your eyes,
living within your shadow
as your happy slave,
content to worship
at the hem of your dress,
to dream of lying my head
upon your knee,
but I was
stopped in my tracks
by your Mona Lisa
smile,
so insignificantly
significant.

Frozen in time,
my blood congealed
with all you coldly concealed,
no warmth to spare
for my pleading eyes,
my devotions thwarted
by the very gem
I thought I would die for,
because when you turned
your lips
there was no sunshine.

It's an interesting piece though I think it lacks some of the freshness you usually tend to bring to these kind of neo-classical romantic pieces. I think everything after the first stanza seems rather anti-climactic. There's something really powerful about that "so insignificantly / insignificant" that it seems like it should end the piece.

There are so many things that can be read into the smile

so insignificantly
significant.

and it's always interesting to me to see how different poets interpret the smile.

I've never been too sure of her. What is she thinking?

Great poem Dark Muse.

Thank you! It is amazing the sensation that one smile has caused.
