Something I wrote in 2007. Please enjoy.

Diamonds n’ Dandelions

She knew that this was wrong. Yet she found herself in this position, feeling highly disturbed and paranoid of her surroundings.

Not far from her she could hear the hearty laughs of the gamblers playing Texas Hold ‘Em.

She wondered where her friends have gone, they couldn’t have left her.

Have they?

She tried to search for them, passing the casino regulars like Martini and Liquor. She finally caught sight of the two, conversing with different kinds of Wine. She was about to approach them until she felt a hand reach out to her.

“Hey, slow down. What’s the rush?”

She turned around and gave eye contact to a red-haired man in his mid twenties, looking quite suave and sophisticated.

“Hello dear. What’s your name? My name’s Diamond.”

He stuck out his hand, waiting for her response. It was firmly met with a cold shoulder.

He tilted his head to the right side, observing her slender and elegant body as she passed him. She noticed his actions and tried to threaten him.

“If you dare lay another finger on me,” she began, her cheeks turning pink. “I’ll --”

“Steady there. All I wanted was your lovely name. You’re the one who’s giving me the look.”

She folded her arms. She needed to get out of this place. She scanned the last place she saw them, but they disappeared. She thought of it best to make small talk with the Card in front of her – he might even give her a bit of information.

“I’m Dandelion.”

Although she refused to make eye contact with him, he still tried to win her attention.

“So, what brings you here? You don’t seem like the type of Flower to be in this lovely casino.”

“My friends.” she replied, trying to sound polite. “They were supposed to show me around.”

“Oh. You mean the other two?” he said, gesturing near the slot machines.

She looked at the direction he was pointing to. She saw her friends, namely Rose and Violet, being taken away by the Revolver Brothers.

Some friends indeed.

“I suppose.” She muttered, quite vexed that she was left behind by her companions.

She eyed the clock that was above the roulette wheel. It was currently 1 am in the morning. She sighed. She felt like going home now.

“Want me to drive you home?” he offered, seeing the Flower clearly didn’t like her surroundings.

She thought about it for a bit; seeing that she had no better option, accepted.

They got into his Chevrolet, the snazzy car waiting to be revved up.

She thanked him, as he closed the car door. Maybe this Card wasn’t so bad after all.

“Where’s your place?” he said, as he started the car.

“It’s in Gardener St.” she directed. “Just a few miles from Roulette Boulevard.”

They were silent for a few moments, the Flower trying to focus her thoughts elsewhere, and the Card transfixed on the road.

Diamond was the one who first broke that silence.

“You know, I’m one of the cards who manage that casino you hate so much.”

“Oh, really?” the Flower commented, still not making eye contact.

“Yeah, I share it with my brothers. Clubs, Spades and Hearts.” he paused, making a slight turn. “We’re all Aces.”

She looked at him, seeing what was thought to be a smile.

“And you’re proud to be owning a casino?”

He pursed his lips. “Not really. It was dad’s dying wish.”

“So I presume; he’s the sort of a-Godfather like Card?”

Diamond chuckled. “You can put it that way if you want.”

The conversation stopped for a while, as they were caught in traffic.

“What about you, Ms. Dandelion. I haven’t heard your side of the story.”

“I refuse to share it with you.”

“Why not? Is this supposed to be a turn-on? Having men guess the mystery that shrouds you?”

“No!” she replied, revolted that his ego was the size of a hot air balloon.

“Ooh. Having signs of PMS aren’t we?”

Ignore him. Maybe he’ll finally take a hint that you hate him.

“Take a turn on the left.” She ignored, choosing to instruct him instead. “Stop.” She said softly, finally arriving at her beloved home.

“So, you live in an apartment, eh?” he asked, opening the door for her. “Shabby little place you got there.”

Argh.

It was already one thing that he already defiled her body by staring at it. She couldn’t take his stupid ego no more. Stupid Aces. They always think they’re the ones on top of the Deck.

She tried to meet Diamond with much arrogance whilst controlling her generosity from thanking him.

“Hey. You forgot something.” He said, as she was about to open the door.

She did a half-turn and got a soft peck on the lips.

“You forgot your goodnight kiss, Ms. Dandie.”

He gave her his number, neatly inserted in her bag, despite all her objections.

“Goodnight. I’m glad we met.”

He drove off, feeling high as ever.

The Flower couldn’t think for a moment, as all of that happened in only a few minutes. She noticed that she was blushing faintly, and hurried inside before someone spotted her.

His face kept racing through her mind. His auburn hair and brown eyes. She couldn’t stop thinking about him.

No! Has she gone mad?! He was an egoistic pervert! And, he was –

She looked for the card he left in her bag, fixing her blonde hair as she did so. She grabbed her cell phone, and dialed the number written.

The Perfect Gentleman.
