I know that, without hearing it from a scientist, I do not get enough sleep on daily basis.

How many hours a day do you sleep? Do you think it is enough?

During the week, I'm lucky to get 5 hours of sleep. I probably average that. I get an extra hour or so on the weekends. I know, I know. It's not nearly enough.

Not nearly enough. Usually less than 5.

Since I had a research I began trimming my sleep although sometimes during class lessons I slumber. :) Everyday I sleep between 12-3 and wake up 4-6 to prepare for the class. No wonder I am skinny and pale. :(

I read articles recently that everyone really does need at least 8 hours of sleep a night to stay healthy. I have always needed 8 hours or I am a wreck...I walk around like a complete zombie. I don't know how some of your function on only 5, 6 hours of sleep. Don't you know that sleep repairs the body and the cells and it also rests the brain. You are all going to burn out early if you don't try to get more shut-eye!

Coffee. Exercise. Strategic napping. Also, on the weekends I usually get 12+ hours of sleep a night.

It's strange. I've heard that we "need" about eight hours of sleep a night, but everyone that I talk to gets about five.

I ran some experiments on the weekends to determine my sleep requirement and found I needed about 7 hours a night.

2-3 hours a night....wether I'm tired or not!

I USED to be able to sleep.... but I've clearly forgotten how to these days (and nights).

Was that a controlled experiment? :p

Ehhh, I'm a sleepaholic. As Bunuel once said in answer to what he would do if he had only 20 more years to live he said "give me two hours of activity and twenty-two hours in dreams." So true for me. I live in dreams.

I don't know why, but I'm just one of those people who requires a lot of sleep. Ten hours is perfect for me- I wake up well-rested and I stay healthy. If I get more than 10, I'm groggy and feel tired from too much sleep. If I get 8-9 hours, I can function but I yawn all day and any less than 8 hours, I'm barely functional. Needless to say, as a university student, I hardly ever get my 10 hours. It makes for long days.

I sleep 5 to 7 hours a day and at times I just doze off. But very often I take short nap and in between my working hours I like to doze off for it vitalizes me. I can doze off in a comfy chair or when I am traveling on a local bus. I can doze anywhere at times while working also for it gives me a little vitality and energy. I get tired very often mentally and need a short respite and noting gives me a refreshing feeling better than a short sleep. Sleep is really a great gift man has got and of course when I wake up from sleep I really very energetic and start thinking about something, some work. It balances everything.

Depends on if I'm working or not. I've been known to sleep in anywhere from nine to twelve hours if not. If I'm working, i've been guilty of four or less. That really, really sucks in case you were wondering. Then it's constant caffeine and nicotine intake until my immune system says 'screw you' and I crash.

In the week- end I use to sleep 10 - 11 hours. For the week ,I do sleep no more than 6 - 7 hours daily.

I average about 7-8 most week nights. It depends. Tuesdays and Thursdays I tend to fall asleep on the sofa at around 9pm so on those nights it's more, but most weekdays I'm in bed for 11 so I get 7 hours. Tuesdays and Thursdays are my tired days, regular as clockwork.

I get normally about 6-8. Anything less than 7 and I'm not a rational or functional person. I'm moody and I just can't focus. A lot depends on my kids. You would think that with the youngest being three that I would get a good night's sleep, but wouldn't you know that my little one was in my room at about 4 a.m. just like she has been every night for a month or so.

About 7-8 hours weekdays and 8-9 weekends and holidays. I can't go below 7 hours without being very grumpy (even more so than usual) and could not imagine running on 5 hours like some of you lot, no way.

Oh, I've also got this theory that it is natural to sleep more during the winter months, like sort of semi-hibernation, in order to save energy and the like. I think it is an evolutionary need and we should organise society so that it starts a good two/three hours later during the winter months (which in the UK is the entire year barring July and August).

I'm also thinking about starting a worldwide petition to ban alarm clocks because they are just pure evil and completely unnecessary. One of the great joys of life is to wake up naturally, to the sound of sweet birdsong or to feel the gentle sunlight warming the cheek as it slowly persuades yours eyes to open. Sudden, shrill, electronic bleeping or dissonant ringing is utterly barbarian, and totally vulgar. Follow this up with the mad dash to find pants and socks, with no time for a relaxing tea and a few chapters of quality prose, and the whole thing becomes quite a ludicrous farce.

In Antarctica with so little to do, the population averages 9.5 hours a night, which might be optimum for all of us.

See, there is some evidence for my theory in that! :conehead:

I second that. I used to "hibernate" when I was a student. But now I haven't been able to do that for 3 years in a row, due to writing my thesis, graduating and now working full time. It isn't exactly affecting my physical health, but I feel drained and find it hard to be enthusiastic and positive about anything, which is not helpful when you are a teacher and have to motivate tired, naughty little brats.
I wouldn't mind working longer hours in summer, though. Usually I'm full of energy in summer and can't sleep anyway.

Se7en hours, on average. Oft it's ~10 hours on Sundays when I've had too much scotch the night before. :D

Anywhere between 4-8 hours- if I sleep for more than 8, my entire body hurts the next day and if I know I'm going to get less than 3 hours, I don't even bother since it only makes me more tired.

Yes - I ache if I sleep too much.

Anywhere between 7-9. I'm a sucker for midday naps though. Never used to be.

Of course, I can live on that if I drink plently of water.

Of course, if I have a lot of homework I get to bed later. I mean, if I get to bed at midnight and wake at seven, I can live on it.

Mid-year two years ago I had trouble sleeping. About 4h, including the number of time I'd wake in the night. I'd drop off at 3am, wake officially 7.30am-ish.

I'm happy with what I sleep. A few nights ago I was off at 8.30pm. Probably I had a high temperature and was sick. I can't usually take 11h sleep.

Six hours, I guess. However, it depends on my work load(inverse proportion ofcourse;)).

I used to sleep as much, if not more when I was a full time uni student, and also when I lived on the farm. Given the option, I would sleep my life away. Dreams are pretty fantastic - Especially the ones when you're half awake and you can direct them.

I'm all over the place now. Sometimes I go to sleep as soon as I get home from work and sleep until the next morning (is a more regular occurance when I'm low on iron), and sometimes I barely sleep at all. I guess it averages out at 8 hours.

do you ever have the problem that you figure out you can direct them, and then you wake up? that bugs the hell out of me.

I need at least 8 hours if I don't get that I am the most annoyed person ever, during those midnight feeding when my son was younger I banged my head against the wall to keep myself up and not screaming. I need sleep. my boyfriend always thought I was mad but I just didn't know how else to get through this time. you can't talk to me if I am sleep deprived

Yes! I also sometimes 'redo' a part of a dream that didn't quite go right, yet get frustrated because the same thing happens over and over. Maybe I don't control them as much as I think.
