View Full Version : O, Canada!

Now that the Winter Olympics begin tonight in Vancouver, and pitchers and catchers are starting to report for Spring Training (best o' luck, Blue Jays fans!) here are the official lyrics of the Canadian anthem which those of us south of the border would do well to study, so that we can sing along!
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

UPDATE: I just turned on Dylan Ratigan's show and heard about the tragedy on the practice for the
luge. Deepest Condolences to Georgia and to all of their brave participants.

Nice! I hear it all the time at sporting events but I only ever remember the first two lines.
I love the opening ceremony and the parade of nations. I was just reading today about the brouhaha over the final torch bearer. Apparently it's not Wayne Gretsky.

The Canadian press is predicting Betty Fox, the mother of the cancer research activist from Vancouver, Terry Fox. I think it's a pretty decent prediction considering that Vancouver is the host city. Gretsky is from Ontario, although he's been really secretive about what he's up to. His brother was on TV this morning and refused to tell where he was.
Here is the original 1880 lyrics
Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
You'll likely hear a bilingual version at the Olympics where the middle part of the song will be the French lyrics and the beginning and end in English, or half-half.
The translation of the French lyrics since the English version isn't a translation:
O Canada!
Land of our ancestors,
Thy brow is wreathed with a glorious garland of flowers.
As in thy arm ready to wield the sword,
So also is it ready to carry the cross.
Thy history is an epic
Of the most brilliant exploits.
Thy valour steeped in faith
Will protect our homes and our rights
Will protect our homes and our rights.

They're predicting 25 medals, up from 23 in Turin, the government pumped a whole crap load of money into Sports Canada for this Olympics. Gah, so much waste, I enjoy the Olympics and enjoy what they stand for, but too much money is thrown around for it.

The women's team is guaranteed at least a silver, the US team is the only real competition and the Canadian team has managed to win most of the time.
The curling teams have a good chance at gold as well.
We got 7 gold 4 years ago, so I would be really surprised if we didn't get any this time round.
Standings from 2006
1 Germany (GER) 11 12 6 29
2 United States (USA) 9 9 7 25
3 Austria (AUT) 9 7 7 23
4 Russia (RUS) 8 6 8 22
5 Canada (CAN) 7 10 7 24

Oh thats awful! what a tragedy!
Listen to this:
The International Luge Federation and Vancouver Olympic officials said their investigation showed that the crash was the result of human error and that “there was no indication that the accident was caused by deficiencies in the track.”
In a joint statement they said Kumaritashvili was late coming out of the next-to-last turn and failed to compensate. “This resulted in a late entrance into curve 16 and although the athlete worked to correct the problem, he eventually lost control of the sled, resulting in the tragic accident.”
http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/vancouver/luge/news?slug=ap-lug-lugerdies&prov=ap&type=lgns
Human error? Bull sh*t! Human error flying at 90 mph is very likely. The course should not have allowed him to flip over the edge into a pole. All it would have taken is a plexi glass shield above that barrier. To hurt yourself within the course is one thing and part of the game; to flip over the course is another thing entirely Someone is to blame for this man's death.

It's the olympic culture as a whole that pushes for continual higher speeds and more dangerous tricks. It's a problem in figure skating where no one is taken seriously anymore unless they can do quads, and just look at that American snowboarder who ended up near dead trying to pull of a dangerous trick in training. The IOC pushes the designers of the track to build faster tracks, they shouldn't be surprised when this kind of stuff happens.

I understand O.P. But higher speeds requires certain safety adjustments. Someone did not do their homework in designing and testing this facility. And for the IOC to scoff this off now and just say it's human error is akin to malpractice. If someone else gets hurt in this manner, then I would say their judgement is criminal.
By the way, I'm not blaming Canada for this, if that's what you're thinking.

those metal pillars should not have been exposed like that. there should be some form of padding around them and netting along the sides.

I agree Nimah... when I saw the footage and heard that his head had banged into a STEEL pole, I was like, well, at the very least they could have had padding on the polls! They have stuff like that on kids playground equipment all over the world, you'd think they could afford to put some up at the Olympics!
Watching the luge is going to be terrifying now.
On a lighter note I will say that I thought that the fiddlers in the open ceremony were awesome, and the light show was beautiful. I thought it was lovely that the ceremony had an almost literary feel to it with the quotes throughout, the reference to folk stories, and the beat poet at the end.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that no matter what you hit, when your body is almost instantly decelerating from 90 mph to 0 mph, you're probably not getting up. Padded or not, hitting anything going that fast is a bad day.
Even with, at best, a higher wall like the one they are currently putting in, a crash at that speed changes your survival chances only from "certain death" to "very probable death."

Yes but netting of some sort could have helped.
Yes, but then that would interfere with the press's ability to film the events.
Besides, it is highly unusual for anyone ever to fly out of the track.
Now the athletes are complaining because they have to start further down the track and won't be able to reach top speeds and break records.

They're flying down a rollercoaster-like ice tube at 140 km/hour... who could possibly be surprised that someone died doing this? Anyone engaging in a sport that dangerous accepts the risks involved, there's no point blaming the track. Dangerous sports are exhilarating, and people are going to keep participating because they love the feeling. It's not the first time that something like this has happened, and it won't be the last. C'est la vie.
Side note: I thought that the opening ceremony was wicked, except for the Saskatchewan part (but it's pretty hard to make Sask seem interesting).

Yeah, I don't think padding would have done anything.
On another note, I've heard they've now altered the course for the men and moved the starting line up to the women's. They won't reach the extreme speeds now. I heard even the most experienced luger had an accident in trials.

As the competitions come to a close today, the Americans did quite well topping the standings with 4 medals (1 G, 2 S, 1 B), Korea is in second with 1 G and 1 S.
Other gold medal winners today: Netherlands, Slovakia, and Switzerland.
Canada, Germany, and Poland finish the day with one silver each.
France and Austria round it off with a bronze each.
The highlights I think were Anton Ono for the US getting a surprise silver as two Koreans crash in the men's short-track 1500m speedskating. Meanwhile, Canada's women's hockey team set an Olympic record defeating Slovakia 18-0.
There were some upsets for Canada in the moguls as Jenn Heil wasn't able to defend her 1st place position from Turin, but Hannah Kearney, of the USA, earned her gold with a stellar performance.

Ouch the Norwegians just snatched the men's curling victory away, going into an extra end, Canada has the hammer so we should win *fingers crossed*.
Also, the Norwegians are wearing ridiculous checkered pants.
The Swedes beat Great Britain too, somehow the Scandinavians have become good at curling...
Edit: The American curling team is unusually young, only one member over 30, looks like they're going to lose to Germany. (Germany won)
Edit2: Looks like we're about to lose *sigh*
Edit3: Woot! Canada wins with a fantastic final throw.
Switzerland beats Denmark also.
Thus, after round 1 of curling.
USA, Den, Nor, GB 1 Loss, 0 Wins
Can, Swe, Swi, Ger 0 Losses, 1 Win
China and France have yet to play.
For those who don't know how Olympic curling works. There's a round robin tournament where everyone will play everyone else once, and after that the first place team plays the fourth place for a position in finals, and the second place plays the third. The losers play for the bronze, while the winners play to determine who gets gold and silver.

The pairs free skate was two days ago, Chinese got gold and silver, Germans got bronze.
That was a pretty brutal event to watch. I mean, the Chinese definitely earned it, but considering the criteria for doing well was basically not falling, it certainly wasn't the best.

I thought the German pair had pretty good skates. The Chinese, Russians, and Germans were the only ones going into that competition that had any chance of medalling anyway.
On the other hand, the men's singles was fantastic. Some great performances, too bad Patrick Chan choked a little. He always chokes, any competition I've watched him in he does it. When he's on he's on, evident from his silver at worlds, but he's so rarely on.

I was throughly unimpressed with the Germans. I'm sorry, but you shouldn't be able to stumble through your program and win an olympic medal. I was sad about the Russians- I really liked that pair. I was talking to a friend of mine who is a figure skater and follows the circuit really closely, and I was asking her about the Canadian pair. Apparently they are definitely good enough to compete with the Chinese teams, but the girl doesn't do well under big pressure. :( She's sure they'll come back to medal at the Worlds but that still sucks :(
Yeah, the mens was way better. Not surprised about Chan, though still disappointed. He hasn't skated a clean short program yet this year, which sucks. Also, too bad Plushy's a giant tool.

Haha, he was badmouthing Lysacek at the press conference after for not doing the quad.
Lysacek is a bit of an awkward gangly weirdo, but at least he doesn't come off as a jackass like Plushenko.
The male figure skaters are a weird group this time round. Weir is probably the most over the top flamboyantly gay figure skater ever.
Patrick Chan is really awkward in interviews also, and he's a bit cross-eyed. I want to rout for him because he's Canadian, but you can feel the nervousness radiating from him.
Can't really comment on the Japanese figure skaters, besides them being very talented on the jumps.

On a happier note, Virtue and Moir took first place in the ice dance, they have a 4 point gap over the Americans going into the free skate tomorrow.

I thought that Virtue and Moir were impressive in the ice dancing, but I found the couple who did the "aboriginal" dance inauthentic and a bit offensive. Funny thing -- there is one more element tonight to determine the medal standings, but a headline in the sports pages of our local
paper said "Canadian Couple Takes Gold." A little premature, don't cha think?
I tell you something, though, as soon as the Olympics finish, there has to be something really, really special on before I watch network prime time again. I'll go to my grave before I spend one minute watching "Parenthood"or the two inane game shows. The commercials were quite oppressive in frequency as well as their length-- one minute of Olympic action followed by 5 minutes of ads?
By the bye, Julia Mancuso has an online business, but she had to take her website down temporarily because of an Olympic rule forbidding participants from using their name, likeness, photos for commercial purposes. If that's the case, how can NBC run ads featuring a U.S. female figure
skater (some cell phone provider), a female snowboarder (AT&T and Chap Stick), and other Olympic participants in commercial ads? Orwellian aspects in the Olympics: Every athlete is equal, but some athletes are more equal than others.

Post script to the last reply above:
I guess I'm not alone in my intense disdain for NBC's oppressive commercials during the Olympics. Norm Chad's funny column yesterday (it may have been in the Washington Post, perhaps) and an article on AOL's welcome screen says pretty much the same thing. NBC's slavish devotion to the bottom line is going to end up biting them you-know-where.
And I guess the sports article I mentioned re: the ice dancing was a good prognosticator-- The Canadian team of Virtue and Moir did in fact win the Gold Medal. And man, did they ever deserve it! Their free-style dance was elegant, delicate, and emotionally moving without being cloying. Both ice dancers were physically appealling with
a boy-next-door, girl-next-door accessibility.
I think Tanith Belbin the American girl who ,with her partner Ben Agosto, won 4th place is absolutely gorgeous, like Julia Roberts, for instance. Hollywood should sign her up.
The American team who won Silver Davis and White were absolutely charming. I loved the Indian folk dance they did the other night, and apparently the folks in India do as well, as they've been downloading the video by the thousands. I loved their costumes last night, but the music? Ugh. What was it Phantom of the Opera by Andrew
Dice Webber? Andrew Lloyd Clay? Something like that.
The Bronze winners--that Russian team -- might be strong and as far as we know they could be as personable as the North Americans, the Israelis, the French, and the Italian teams, who as far as we know, are all "good skates." But just like their "aboriginal" dance, I thought Douminina and
Shabalin of Russia relied too much on gimmicks. What was up with those ropey things last night?
I really enjoyed the ice dancing events but I really miss seeing a team as electrifying as Torville and Dean. (Most of you are probably too young to remember them.)

Plushenko's a sore loser, Lysacek deserved that gold. Doing a quad is really difficult, and it should justly be highly rewarded, but doing a quad doesn't mean you can ignore your transitions, footwork, speed, and skate a slow plodding routine like Plushenko's to win gold.

I'm with you. I've basically only watched the alpine sking events, and it's ridiculous. They have two skiers come down, which must take around five minutes of time, and then they go to a series of commercials lasting about five minutes. The commercial time must equal the show time. I'm sure it has to do with the cost of these games, but it certainly doesn't make for a pleasant watching experience.

We got a silver in women's speed skating 3000m relay.
Our flag bearer this year, 37 year old Clara Hughes, ends her career on a high note, taking home a bronze in 5000m long track speed skating. That makes it her 4th winter medal, which goes along with her 2 summer medals, to make her one of the most decorated Olympic athletes to compete in both seasons.

I don't think they were inflated in the free skate. I looked at the breakdown on the Olympics site. She shines in the components category, and I think she has the best footwork and transitions of the top 5 besides Yu-Na Kim. Even given her excellent performance in that category she only received 1 more point than Asada. Otherwise, she skated a more technically difficult routine than Asada (Rochette had the next most difficult after Kim), and probably made about the same amount of mistakes.
Her short program score could arguably be considered a little on the high side, maybe a 68 would have been more appropriate than 71. Either way, she would have gotten the bronze.
Nagasu was arguably underscored in her components category, but I think Joannie is a more graceful skater than her.
It's what they called a sympathy vote.
I think this is ridiculously dismissive of Joannie's capabilities. She did receive the silver in the world's last year, it's not like she isn't a top tier skater.

Even if Rochette DID get the "sympathy vote" (as you so kindly attributed her victory to), she would have gotten the bronze anyway with a much lower score. But that's beside the point, because she deserved it.

I"ll admit this, I would be one of the suckers to make sure she gets a medal regardless. After seeing other competitors, she's clearly not gold material. That's just my opinion, so don't jump all over me on that. But I saw a few good bronze contenders, and she could easily be in 3rd, or 4th, or 5th. However, if I were a judge — and being human — there's just no way that I would have let her leave the games without a medal in light of what happened.
So is it the right medal? Not sure. Is it the right call? Yes.

Too bad the women's curling loses a close match against Sweden to take home a silver. Sad to say they messed up the tenth end allowing the Swedes to tie it up.
Anyway, two golds and a bronze in short track speed skating makes this another great day for Canada.
Only real medal opportunities left for Canada are the men's pursuit tomorrow, men's hockey, and men's curling. All guaranteed at least silvers, if we're lucky golds.
4 man bobsleigh have a good chance at a medal as well.

What is the difference, if any, between "bobsled" and "bobsleigh"?

I was ripping my hair out in the third, Canada was falling apart, playing like crap. They pulled it together in the OT and dominated.
Canada finishes the games with the most gold medals of any nation in a single winter games, 14, and third in the overall medal standings. Not too bad.
Edit: The USA, Germany, and Norway did well also, getting first, second, and fourth position in the overall medal standings.
Russia had a disappointing finish back in 6th.

I guess it's easy to win the gold medal when you have ringers like that on your team.
Cant believe its already over, seems to go so quickly. Makes me soooo homesick:(
