Hope your day has been great!
An interview with Dark Lady:
Why are we doing this interview thing?
I guess, 'cause it's my birthday soon. I'm answering them because I got so excited that I had mail when I've not had internet for ages (just bought a house and Sky took forever to sort out phone and net) that I thought I just had to!
Are you sure you want to do this?
Ummm...errrr...ye-es!
Got milk?
Lol. To answer literally, I think my fiance used most of the milk last night but I hope there's enough for tea. :-P
Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?
I don't know but the question made me think of the film 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit'. What an amazing film!
If you had a personal theme song what would it be?
That's tricky. I think I'll go with 'Rebel Rebel' by David Bowie.
Are you male or female?
Female.
What makes you keep coming back?
I am seriously bad when it comes to procrastinating so I often come here when I have something important I should be doing. The rest of the time it's because I like it here.
Are you happy with the way things are here?
Mostly. I can't think of much I'd like to change. LitNet is different to the other forum I go on and I think that's good. Variation and all that.
Which countries have you visited?
I haven't left the UK much. I've been to France twice, one of the Greek Islands and Rome in Italy. It would be great to go away on holiday with my fiance but what with the mortgage, saving up for dogs, saving for our wedding, and hoping to have kids soonish there's not much extra cash!
How do you like your home town?
The one I'm in right now? Well I moved here in December so it's early days yet but so far so good. I do wish either that I could drive or the train station wasn't quite so far away.
If you could live somewhere different, where would it be and why?
I would maybe move back to England (am in Scotland) or possibly to Germany. I don't really know why! All I can say is that if Scotland were to ever get independence that would be me gone.
Do you have any pets?
My fiance is maybe going to get me a cat for my birthday! He's been talking to the shelters round here, trying to locate one. We love animals (we're veggies too) and hope to one day have two german shepherds. Also fish, a wormery (not so much as pets, more for compost) and obviously the cat. We both grew up with dogs and I had cats too.
What makes you happy?
Lots of things. Reading a good book, spending time with friends and family, writing, cups of tea, popping bubble wrap, buying new clothes, the satisfying noise tipex makes when you shake it, doodling, cheese, Christmas, all kinds of things.
What is mankind's biggest achievement, and its greatest downfall?
I'd say our greatest achievement is...the internet? And downfall is war. Trying not to sound too much like some sort of beauty pagent winner here.
Do you feel comfortable in your walk with God/atheism?
Yup. I'm an atheist and proud.
Which actor should play you in a movie based on your life?
Well, for 'doppelgänger week' on facebook I just put Shannyn Sossamon (from 'A Knight's Tale') as my celeb look-a-like (not sure if I see it but this is what I've been told) so I'll go for her, though she's older than me so not sure how well that would work... Or maybe Natalie Portman. She's older than me too but I love her!
Given the option, what animal would you choose to be?
Probably a cat. I'd say a domestic animal because they tend to have it easy compared to a lot of wild animals and I think it would be cool to be able to walk along the tops of fenced and climb to the tops of trees (I'm a bit on the clumsy side).
What were your favorite things to do the past? What about now?
I don't think they've changed much. Read, write, chat. I'd say I'm fairly easily pleased.
What makes you feel great about yourself?
Getting dressed up to go out somewhere.
How did you meet your significant other?
We were at high school together. It got to sixth year and I'd never spoken to him. He decided to get my attention, though, and so dragged me into a game of 'spoons' in the common room.
For those who don't know, the way spoons in played is that everyone sits round a table and you each get four cards. The idea is to get four of a kind (four kings, or four twos etc) and so the first person lifts a card off of the pack and if they need it they take it and get rid of another of their cards and if not they just pass it on. The next person takes the card and repeats etc. So, when somebody gets four of a kind they grab a spoon form the middle of the table and everyone else had to grab one when they see this. There is one less spoon than person (like musical chairs) and whoever doesn't get one is out.
So, my fiance told me I had to play to make up the numbers and when I said I didn't know how he said he'd teach me. In the first round when someone grabbed a spoon he took two and gave one to me so I wouldn't be out. We flirted al that week and then he got my number and asked me to go to the cinema with him. Now, six years later, here we are!
Who inspires you most?
I don't know. In life? Maybe my parents. In my writing then loads of people from Blake, to Charlotte Bronte.
What are you naturally good at? (Skills, abilities, gifts etc.)
Errr...I hope I'm naturally quite good at writing fiction (have done it since I was ickle). I was quite good at maths at school.
What is the one thing you must do before you die?
'You' as in 'me' or 'you' as in 'one'? For me personally it would be to get a novel published. For people in general I would say everyone should go skinny dipping once (I haven't done this yet).
If you had to teach something, what would you teach?
Well I actually did start training to be an English teacher so English! I gave it up, though, as it was really supposed to be a back-up in case I never made it as a writer but it took up so much of my time that I couldn't write.
What would you regret not fully doing, being or having in your life?
I would regret not trying to make it as a writer.
Do you feel the divine spark of life within you or do you consider yourself a mechanical thing?
I'd have to say that I believe in the laws of physics so I think every physical action needs a physical cause. I do not think there's a seperate part of a person that could survive without their body. I guess that means I consider myself a mechanical thing.
What method do you cherish above all others, as means to improving your life?
Method? I don't know what counts as a method. Just always do your best.
What is your role in an emergency situation: the 911 dialer, the person who runs to the scene to help, the video recorder, or the person too overcome by shock to do anything?
I think this is the sort of thing you can't answer until you've been in the situation but from past experiences I think I'd run to the scene to help. It always worried me what I'd do in a high pressure situation but when it came to it I acted. Good to know.
What one thing would you NEED to have on a deserted island if you didn't have to worry over food and water?
A book.
What song is in your head at the moment?
'Pressure on Julian' by Blur. It was on the last album I listened to.
Which book are you reading at the moment?
To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf. I really like Woolf. When I was at uni we had to read Mrs Dalloway and so many people seemed to hate it. I was so convinced by them that it took me a while before I realised I really liked it.
The last book you finished reading?
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. I really liked this, too. It was recommended to me by my brother's girlfriend and I very much enjoyed it.
What is your favourite quote?
This is another tough one! As much as I really want to give a quote by Blake or Shakespeare or someone amazing like that, if I'm honest my favourite is, "You dense, irritating, miniture beast of burden." It's from 'Shrek'. Hehe.
Favorite food?/ Comfort food?
Favourite food is my mum's spinach cannelloni and my favourite comfort food is the cinemin whirls they used to do in Tesco. They still do them but they don't have icing on anymore. :-(
What time of day do you most often find yourself on the LitNet?
Probably afternoon/evening but since it's morning just now I guess any time.
What are you wearing at the moment?
I haven't got dressed yet so I'm wearing pink Betty Boop pajama bottoms that my friend bought me for my last birthday and one of my fiance's old long-sleeved tops (grey).
Favorite poem?
Tricky. I love Blake but I might actually have to go with Elliot's 'The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock'.
First novel you remember reading on your own?
I read from quite a young age but my memory's appalling. I think the first I can remember is Puppies in the Pantry. It's part of the 'Animal Ark' series. I had quite a few of those at one point.
What era do you find most of the books you read are from?
Probably within the last century, although
I try to read a variety of books.
Favorite TV shows?
I don't really watch much TV. Recently my fiance and I have been watching a lot of animal shows but favourite overall would be 'Friends', 'Spaced', 'Family Guy', 'South Park' and 'Black Books'. I've just realised they're all comedies. I do watch more serious shows but I wouldn't watch them over and over.
Which LitNet members would you like to meet in person if you could?
I don't know. It would be weird. Probably Scheherazade, stlukesguild, Neely and mono.
Last words you said out loud?
Well my fiance's still in bed so I haven't spoken to anyone yet today. Last night I probably said 'Night night'.
Last person you hugged/kissed?
My fiance, last night.
What do you do (for a living) to be able to keep your LitNet addiction going? And are you happy with your chosen profession?
I just have a part-time job right now. I'm a data entry clerk. It's better than the other jobs I've had because I'm not in retail. However, I would love to be able to make a living writing and I'm planning to start tutoring English soon so I can work from home.
What question would you like to ask yourself?
Why did I buy that pasta sauce the other day when I never use shop bought sauces? What a waste of money!
What would you like to be if you could change your profession?
Think I've made that clear in previous questions. I'd love to be a writer.
What is your most outstanding feature?
I've been told my eyes (very dark brown) but my fiance also loves my bottom!
If you could change one thing about the way you look, what would that be?
I would possibly make my eyelashes slightly longer. Or maybe make my boobs a cup size bigger. Not sure.
Which book do you wish you had written?
The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.
What should you be doing at the moment instead of answering these questions?
Probably writing. Or maybe the washing up. But I have an excuse: I'm ill. I had to phone in sick to work yesterday so I'm allowed to sit around being lazy.
If you could only rescue one item from your burning house, what would it be, and why?
Either my laptop (it was new for Christmas) or my 'cello (it's the most expensive thing I own after the house).
Wonderful Superman or depressing Batman?
I can't go both? Then...Batman.
Anything that you want to forget but you never can?
I have painful memories but I don't think I'd want to forget them. Every experience we have and decision we make shapes us into who we are. God, that sounded cheesy! On a lighter note I'd maybe do away with the memory of me throwing up into a sink with about ten people from my year (including my then boyfriend and now fiance who I'd only been with for a week) watching at a hall party. Not sure if that adds much to me as a person now. Perhaps it makes me more wary of absinth.
Tell us about some amusing translation mistake you have heard or made yourself.
I'm afraid I can't think of any.
Are you mostly happy with life or are you still in pursuit?
Mostly happy. I think once the house has a bit more furniture and I feel more at home it will be better.
What type of Faerie would you like to be and why?
Queen Mab. 'Cause I love Romeo and Juliet as it was the first Shakespeare I ever read.
What makes you laugh?
The film 'Blades of Glory', Dara O'Briain, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Gallaxy, my fiance, lots of things.
What part of “Final” don’t you understand?
Must be that tricky 'i' part.
One final word of wisdom for LitNet users?
Always read the instructions, even if you don't follow them.
What question would you like to ask to the person to be interview after you?
What's your favourite smell?
Hope your day has been great!
