my friends and i have offically decided
that we intend to buy a private island
maybe somewhere in tahiti
or one situated in the uniquely
blue seas of fiji...

you see we figure that island paradise
is going at a pretty reasonable price
i mean what's a couple of hundred mill
between old mates? and anyway
we're figure if we fix up the place
it'll be a kinda get away from the rat race

we don't mean an exclusive resort
that's not our dream
that's a corporate scheme
we wanna build a place
where people can come and just be
stay for free
we'd still use money
but weed would be
the central currency
and we'd build cantina
so the sun dazed inhabitants
of paradise could feed indulgently
in the evenings
after a day in the fields
or a day spent dreaming on beaches

we'd construct a library
of the knowledge of the common people
and it would the only building
on the whole island with a steeple
we'd worship at the feet of
none other than mother nature
beautiful creator we'd make love to her
not rape her
we imagine a place where
concrete jungle paved from hate
and skyscrapers placed to elevate
the human race and escape the dirt
the earth from which we have risen
is nothing more than a forgotten ambition

imagine... babylon a forgotten ambition
much like marxism or maybe even like this one

I rather wish you hadn't ended on that reference to a specific ideology, especially as who, these days, identifies Marxism with anything but several failed attempts? Even Marx was reputed to say, after the Communist International was established: "Moi, je ne suis pas Marxist!"

Apart from which the poem is a lovely utopian dream.

yeah, the end did cause me some difficulty. it doesn't quite fit, but i'll keep working on it. it's surprisingly difficult to end a utopian piece...

I like how as the piece progresses it slips more into a romantic, poetic language; maybe indicative of sinking more into one's (day)dreams? Anyway, it's a lovely ideal I'm sure many of us have had. If only we could form our own nation ruled by our dispositions things would be much better and easier.

I particularly loved your idea of a

"library of the knowledge of the common people"...

a sort of I (= for Island)-PEDIA made into a shrine...

Who knows, if we all combine efforts and concentrate on our respective dreams of harmony, we might be able to construct a better world, one day...

Of course this is a beautiful poem of the Utopian sort and in fact there are not reachable things like building on sand. Of course imagination is sweeter than reality and we inherently dream of becoming of this and that as a matter of fact. Of course at the back of our minds all of us crave for things like that.

Cheers guys. I'm glad you liked the poem. I always wonder this kind of idealistic piece lacks substance, so your positive feedback certainly made me smile!
