Do you post on many other forums? To me this forum is quite an enigma: it's so well put together, extensive and thorough, and has loads of members and yet so so few people post anything. It's a very slow and relatively inactive forum. I post on forums where if you post all you have to do is refresh the page 40 seconds later and you will get another three people's posts in the same thread.
Is everyone just shy or not confident about what to say here I mean what is it? What more do you want?

See, I just don't get how someone can get banned. I just doesn't make sense. All you have to do is, in a nutshell 1) not bring up current politics and 2) not flame somebody else. I don't understand how people have trouble with that, especially the flaming part. I understand arguments can get heated but is it worth it to call someone a ****er? on the internet?

The atmosphere just isn't the type in which threads like "Hey, check out my shoes" and "FML, I hate Wednesdays" form. Which is a shame because I love those threads. Also... this place has more old people and less lenient moderation than most other boards. No offense. I love the elderly.

I think it's a cracking forum. My only lament is that I don't have a enought free time to post as often as I'd like!

It's a good forum, although a huge amount of the sections go unused. I hate those forums where there is constant activity. Anyway, I also think animosity on forums is unavoidable, it's pretty unavoidable out in the world too.

Well, I've always thought that not saying anything when there's nothing to say is a strong indicator of intelligence, and this is an intelligent forum compared to the ones that move at lightning speed where people tend to post things like "ya apple pie ftw." I think that people save their comments until they have something meaningful to add to the conversation, which is one of the reasons why I love this place.
As for people with different opinions than us, I'm glad that they're here. I've never met a republican or fundamentalist christian in real life. I might disagree and argue with them, but I love the novelty in it. Also, there are people from all over the world and you get to find out what someone in, say, India thinks of Shakespeare. It's neat.

I, even though I am quite new, love this forum as well. Having the change to read posts by intelligent people makes me feel good. And as to the reason why I ain't posting a lot is that well...although being already 16, I haven't read a lot, but I am trying to fix the mistake.
Also, to end my post, I thank again the wonderful members of this forum because you make me be better.

I browsed this forum a lot before I joined and I am quite glad to have done so. Very intelligent members and none of the fights or trolling found on other forums.

Virgil, I'm going to say this from my heart: There are really few people I know on this site--what I mean is that there are few people I can really talk to on this site and not have to go through a big rigamarole of what I mean--and you are one of them. I will get banned eventually from this site. I know that will happen. Things have already happened that I won't go into that indicate to me that I will be banned. It's just a matter of time. But that doesn't change the fact that this is the best site I have ever found on the internet.
Well I haven't gotten banned. Though I admit I've come close. :D Just don't go over that line. It's not worth it. This place is too much fun. I try to avoid the political and religious discussions. It doesn't pay to argue. No one's mind is ever changed. The only requirements I have is that I defend the honor of my country, the right of religious people to receive respect, and the right for conservative opinions be expressed. I try to do it without ad hominem attacks and just sticking up for our values, though I agree some people you just want to strangle.

I quickly decided not to join in with stuff I knew little about. I still have boot marks on my typing fingers from where I did. There are some very intelligent people who quickly put me right, or persuaded me that I wasn't up enough to contribute to the thread.
On the other hand I find that it has honed my thinking and presentation of arguments, which is very useful. It's easy to talk crap, but much more challenging to post a considered and informed opinion.
The next challenge was not to respond too quickly to provocation. Good humour is an aspiration in the face of adversity, and there can be lots of practice here. If you can keep your rag when all about are losing theirs, then you'll probably win the argument better, or at least lose gracefully.
Apart from the information you can glean, there are also some really nice people to have a laugh, a chat and a discussion with.:)

Hi Virgil. It is a good forum, and I too like the people - yourself included. I've found what people say very inspiring.
What scared me was the erudition of the younger members, (which seems to be a good many), of the forum. I took a look at the photo album. I thought I'd better put a bit of effort into my proclamations.

No, not at all. Actually the strangle part is out of frustration rather than any hatred. I don't hate anyone. And I don't engage in any combat here.

I love making enemies on this site, but one must be deliberate and discriminatory in making enemies. One must not bow and stoop and make an enemy of someone who is not worthy of it. An enemy must be chosen; an enemy must be close to being an equal in both intellect and verbal acumen. Nothing will be gained by engaging an inferior in argument. It will be a waste of time and energy. It is a serious matter to choose one's enemy; one must give some serious thought to it.
One may ask why. Why would you want to make enemies on this site? The answer is simple. I enjoy intellectual, artistic, and verbal combat. I even sometimes learn something from the combat. Victory or defeat is not the point or reason for the combat, although I will admit victory is sweeter than defeat.
A final note: When you are engaging an enemy, and that enemy begins personally attacking you or calling you names, than you have won. When that happens, disengage from the combat, because you have gained the victory.
lol

papayahed, the problem with what you just posted is that no one knows what your point was; there were fifteen posts made between your first post and the last one. Do you understand what I'm saying? Your point has been lost because there were too many posts between it and your statement that what someome just posted proves your point.
I apologize, I'll go slower.
My original point: "There is no reason for anyone to get banned". That statement still stands. It is possible to argue and disagree without animosity. Posters don't get banned arbitrarily and it's never a surprise. Your original post made it sound like you were worried about being banned through no fault of your own. Your second (or third post) clarified what you meant, you are making the choice to be ornery and to make enemies. You know the rules of this site if you choose to push the boundaries you will, probably, get banned and that will be your decision.

Lit Net Forums always reminds me of Prime Minister's Question Time in the House of Commons. The Speaker (Moderators in this case) interject when things get rowdy with cry's of "Order, Order, I must have Order" or "The Honourable Gentleman is out of Order & will withdraw the last statement". Very rarely do they get thrown out, however boisterious they get. Unparliamentary language is however soon jumped upon.
Like Lit Net when you first join & dip your toes in the water, make sure you have some grasp of the subject, as there are those out there that are daunting in their knowledge & abilities of debate.
At the same time, its very knockabout and wide ranging in both the subjects & the characters involved. There is another forum type site out there called "Beyond Assumptions" In fact I believe it is kept up by a Lit Net regular. The material on it is very interesting but if I might indulge in my original comparison its more the House of Lords compared to Lit Net being the House of Commons!

Also, take it from my personal experience, you can avoid getting in trouble on the Net if you THINK before you hit "submit reply."
The other thing is to check your sources carefully!
Too much misinformation gets posted on the web because posters just copy the original errors and it snowballs.
Oh, and excuse me "Dirtbag" (I'm not calling you that, but that's the screenname in reply #7): please define the age range of those whom you consider to be "elderly."

Very few people get banned from this site and before that they receive repeated warnings.
I am sorry that some do not find the rules to their taste or expectations; however, this is a privately owned site, where we have all agreed to follow these rules set at the time of registration.
And, Jermac, please let us know if you need any help at times; it must be an awfully exhausting job bearing that cross of yours.

I have to say, getting banned is probably the only thing that keeps me in line. I often have to go back and edit things for appropriate etiquette and tone. Being on here so long, there are a few people I also just ignore or get sick of the whole clicky thing. Most people are kind and intelligent.
