Brosten herte gie confort
Be kynde in your wysdom
Whan wepyng chekes tyde

Clepe to cloutes of beautee
And fairely childhede chaunts

or

Broken heart give comfort
Be kind in your wisdom
When crying cheeks fall

Call to rags of beauty
And pretty childhood songs

I wish I could learn to write in or, hell, just read middle English proficiently. It looks so interesting and from what I've heard it sounds equally interesting and I love what I've read (and struggled with) from Chaucer. I really like this piece as well. It has a real humanistic, classical quality to it that's very pure and simplistic without being juvenile or banal.

Where did you learn to do this? I am glad you posted the translation of the poem in terms I recognize, but there is something so breathy and ethereal about the first, it catches the reader so guardlessly!

This old Chaucer style is really appealing to me

"falling cheeks" and "rags of beauty"! So economical and so telling.

Posting the ME version and its modern English translation highlights how timeless beautiful language can be. This is classical in its thought.

might you often be "bored at work"...
an antic discreet brooch restored to its gentle luster...

Thank you. There is something about penning my insides in ME. I seem to say so much more this way.
