Every now and then we look for people who are willing to read books with us.

Please post your requests in this thread and then we can start separate discussion threads.

So, I am given Confessions of a Mullah Warrior (http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=TxYlt9dNBRgC&dq=confessions+of+a+mullah+warrior&source=bl&ots=msZHYTfZJA&sig=hTEYnp-vnGI4BvAjSsGVPMyuELU&hl=en&ei=xAleS-2dOIuRjAe01MySAg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CBAQ6AEwAQ) by a friend but I am not sure if I can go through it without group support.

Anyone willing?

I would love to read it. I am just finishing off 'The Land of Green Plums', by Herta Muller. My only problem: I would have to try and obtain the book either through the bookstore which would take anyting between two and three weeks, or alternatively I could travel three hours into the north to look for it or travel five to Galway or four to Dublin in the hope that some bookstore might have a copy. Otherwise, I would be more than happy to read the work.

I will try Dublin, (Easons) - Hope to have it by Friday...

Bump! (Maybe this thread should have a sticky?) I am reading David Foster Wallace's last collection (or so I believe) of fiction, Oblivion, and for once I do not mind the expense of these ereader files.

If someone would like to join me I find him worth the challenge. I also had to review his work for myself. As to his suicide, the density and the discipline of his writing have offered me some insight; it is impossible that it not, and even though I knew nothing about the man until I membered here on LN, I still find his death moving. He had an extraordinary talent.

Hi Jozanny,

I have only read a few essays and excerpts by Wallace, but liked what I've read well enough. I just wanted to give you a 'heads-up' about some stuff from The New Yorker online:

An article about his life and challenges, leading up to his death:
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/03/09/090309fa_fact_max?printable=true

A short story that I'm pretty sure is an excerpt from the novel he left unfinished at his death:
http://www.newyorker.com/fiction/features/2009/03/09/090309fi_fiction_wallace?printable=true

I know you're busy with a book of his now, but I'm just posting so that you might come back to these later, if interested. (And if you haven't read them already.)

Maybe some information on the book might whet some apetites :D
Some things never change. New York City, 1896. Hypocrisy in high places is rife, police corruption commonplace, and a brutal killer is terrorising young male prostitutes. Unfortunately for Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, the psychological profiling of murderers is a practice still in its infancy, struggling to make headway against the prejudices of those who prefer the mentally ill - and the 'alienists' who treat them - to be out of sight as well as out of mind. But as the body count rises, Roosevelt swallows his doubts and turns to the eminent alienist Dr Laszlo Kreizler to put a stop to the bloody murders - giving Kreizler a chance to take him further into the dark heart of criminality, and one step closer to death. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Alienist-Caleb-Carr/dp/0751512958/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1269190392&sr=8-1

Oh don't let this thread die Scher. I really like the thought of people teaming up on lit net to read something together, even if it's not with any formal club or group. This is a perfect idea for Lit Net.

I'm afraid none of the requests fit my reading schedule at the moment.

Anyone got any suggestions for a group read?

Would anyone be interested in House Made of Dawn (http://www.amazon.co.uk/House-Made-Dawn-Momaday/dp/0072434201/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1271320556&sr=1-1)?

I know this is REALLY going to appeal to Sche :), but I am interested in rereading Woolf's To The Lighthouse, not now but say before fall starts in September, and I don't think I could nominate it in the forum bookclub--so any show of hands would be welcome.

I'm looking for someone to read Fernando Pessoa's "The Book of Disquiet" with me. It's a very depressing and unsettling a read, though I'm only 50-55 pages in so far. I have Richard Zenith's Penguin translation (http://www.amazon.com/Book-Disquiet-Penguin-Classics/dp/0141183047/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1273521330&sr=1-1).

Satan: let me get through the week and then I will give you the signal either to make a book buddies thread or not, okay? I never knew about Pessoa until JCamillo v. Mortal Terror in another thread, and he seems to be right up my alley of difficult authors.

Ask Sche about creating the individual topic threads, as I am not entirely clear on that.

I'm very new here and obviously don't know you, but I'd be willing to try and read this with you. It's been a little while since I've done some serious leisure/novel reading and it would be nice to have a book buddy to discuss things with!

Welcome to the forum Snibbles! I believe there is an old discussion of Lighthouse in the forum bookclub, and I'd have to check with Sche-goddess and ruler of the universe if it's okay to start a fresh thread in book buddies.

I studied this novel in a course, and if I can remember some things it might be interesting. Woolf's diction is very accessible but at her best she is very complex, and this novel carries my affection.

I will gladly let you know when I'm ready, and thanks.:thumbs_up

May I join you for To the Lighthouse, Jozanny and Snibbles? It's been a while since I read Woolf closely - first time round I was a minority of one in a group that really did not like her and would welcome the opportunity to read this in the company of readers enjoying the experience. I went on to do my thesis on Woolf but it was many years ago and I shall need much refreshing of memory.

I'd be delighted kasie, if you and Snibbles do not mind the wait until mid-September, if that is okay. It is not just that I am overloading even my considerable chunks of free time--but my intern screwed up the Medicare paperwork, and if I do not get my new chair soon I may have to tap my detective/police chief uncle for a lawyer--if you can imagine me dashing off a cheap thriller here... ;)

I am not really angry with the intern, but the whole system, which makes Denmark's foul odor lovelier than roses. All things being equal, I should have my accounts settled long by then, and some other texts completed.

Sure! I'd be glad to have you join us, Kasie! I don't mind waiting. Whenever you two are ready to begin is fine with me! It's been a real long time since I've read any of Woolf's works and I haven't read 'To The Lighthouse' yet. So it's going to be a fun and new experience for me!

Jozanny -
Sorry to hear about your paperwork! That's a real bummer - I'll be praying that everything goes smoothly!

Jozanny - I really can't believe your situation. I thought our Social Services held the award for Best at Fouling Things Up but yours beat them by a mile! I'm so sorry - hope everything gets sorted ASAP or even sooner. I turned into the Wife from Hell trying to get things sorted for Himself - I could come over and hone my steely sweet smile on your lot, if you like!

September will be fine by me.

My library doesn't have the downloadable versions of Wodehouse but I have ordered What-ho.

Shall we start on June 25th?

Then, we can turn to MCR.
