I just started reading this book. I love Gabriel Garcia Marquez's writing, but this book is confusing! :p Does anyone know where I can find help in understanding it? Maybe a time-line or family tree of of the inhabitants of Macondo?
And there was one word that confused me. The Indians he refers to. Are these the same as the Arabs that they trade with, or are they the indigenous people of the area, or something altogether different?

They are different people. The Indians are the indigenous people of the area, not related with the Arabs – who, in turn, are not related with the gypsies (so far I can remember).

I do not have my copy of the book immediately on hand, but I am pretty sure that the edition I read had a family tree within it. Pehraps you could double check your own copy just in case.

There are family trees in both editions that I own. I ended up jotting down my own little notes next to the characters listed on the family tree to help me sort it out.
