Ouch! This is as brutal (and effective) as a sudden slap in the face.

I agree with the previous poster. But I question the use of the word "eats," perhaps "is fed" would work nicely, but its your poem. I only feel like eats gives the child an inherent devilish quality rather than a devil created by the situation.

I heard about it on the French news yesterday (Jan. 18th), and devoted it a few following lines:

"who saves one life saves a world..."

With unheard cry, Israel sprang into life
out of the chaos of debris
with the aid of Israeli rescuers
operating on the disaster spot.
The mom was spooned out of death
as she was pushing hard
to deliver her baby
whom she named thus
to remember -
life is a lottery or a miracle,
sometime coming from the least
expected (and regarded) part.
