I'm currently a high school junior and wanted to know how much you read for each class, and what other sort of work was entailed. Basically, I want some input about how difficult and time consuming it was.

I am currently an english major at UWO. My workload on average is a book a week per class, and a paper or two a month of varying length.

I think it really depends on the school and the program. From my experience I found you could pretty much get out what you put in. Hopefully if registration goes well you will get into (mostly) classes that you are interested in. I had classes where I read less than 5 books a semester and others that had me reading 10+
And when I say you can get out what you put in, I had a friend who only read summaries of books and made it through college with a B average! That being said, hopefully you can get into classes that you are passionate and you really want to read every book. All in all I'd say it's more time consuming than challenging. If you manage your schedule well it shouldn't be too hard.
Good luck! :)

A book or two a week, unless you focus on poetry, in which case you end up making the difference in "recommended" additional material as apposed to real course material. Generally 200-300 pages a week per class, with two essays and two exams for a year course.

In fairness though, you should also be doing plenty of secondary reading around the subject, so that will beef up the amount you have to read every week!

I believe you should chose what to study in university based on interest, ability and what you want to do with your life. If you don't love literature, it won't matter how heavy and involved the coursework is, it will be too much. If you love literature, real literature and not just reading supermarket best sellers, you will love studying literature and though the course work may be intensive, it will be a labor of love.

How difficult and labor intensive the course is will depend on the school and the program, but also on you and how much you put into it. There is a great deal of writing involved when one studies literature. If you are a good writer and like to write, that's very helpful. If you don't like to write, you will find such a course an uphill struggle.
