I've previously posted a few threads on Kerouac expressing my dislike for his work. However, one common notion I seem to detect is that many people, including myself, love the 'idea' of Jack Kerouac, not necessarily his writing itself. Having said, that does anybody have any suggestions of other books that deal with that same 'idea'? The 'idea' of course being that sort of cross country, road trip, boozing with buddies, adventurous story. I can think of movies that fall into this genre, but not many books come to mind and I'd love to find some other books to read.

It's hardly a landmark of world literature but The Bone Man of Benares by Terry Tarnoff is a bit of fun if you like that sort of thing.

Blue Highways by William Least Heat-Moon. A good book about traveling the back roads of America -- the work is a little bit travel literature and a little bit spiritual quest.

I agree with The Comedian: Blue Highways is an excellent book about a man's travels around the country, but at the same time it is sort of an inward journey as well. Two other good books about a personal journey of sorts is A Fool's Progress by Edward Abbey and The Snow Leopard by Peter Matthiessen

*hands Jermac a cold beer* Excellent choices. I loved each of these books, and their authors, Abbey and Matthiessen are two of my favorites.
