I always found Superman a bit boring to be honest - he is, to all intents and purposes, omnipotent, and his only weakness is an extremely rare, highly noticable mineral.

Batman, while as ridiculous as the next spandex-clad loon, has at least appeared in some fairly decent films, although he is not usually what makes them interesting. Much as I loved The Dark Knight, Christian Bale's ludicrous growling made it hard to take seriously in places...

Do the heroes have to be modern? Beowulf all the way!

"In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power... Green Lantern's light!"

EDIT: So does anyone here read superhero comics? I always seem to find a way to sprinkle them into my reading habits. Right now, I'm working through the Green Lantern "Darkest Night" issues, which are spectacular. Geoff Johns, who is the lead writer on the series, has done an excellent job bringing life and drama back to one of my all-time favorite characters (the Green Lantern/Hal Jordan).

I've also started to read Jeff Lemire's "Sweet Tooth" series from Vertigo -- one of the best new comics going, though it is not quite a "superhero" story.

I had been thinking I should just move it up on my netflix queue and see the thing already, but after reading that I think I'll defer some more. I suppose I'll have to break down and see it eventually if for no other reason than to have an opinion of my own when students ask me about it.

I was just thinking the other day that it might be time to change my avatar around anyway, so this thread gives me a good excuse. I can't actually remember which story my little MS image of the Medieval female warrior is from, so I'll consider her an every-woman stand in for an array of lady warriors from Brunhilde to Bradamante and Britomart (was there some sort of law in the late Middle Ages/Renaissance that women characters who fight should have names starting with "B"?).

Good, at least I'm not alone. Also note my purposeful Freudian error of "think" instead of "thick"; really I must have meant that I am a genius or something...

When I was about 6 I used to have nightmares about the Incredible Hulk, does that count?

But the 70's productions always killed the stories. Even as a kid I was convinced that there was a proforma for any long running series, and The Hulk was no different. Each episode seemed to remind me of something else - 6 Million Dollar Man, Planet of the Apes, The Hulk - it was like watching the same programme with a different character and setting.

Nowadays the story is sacrificed to the special effects. Both equally boring in the end.

Yes, point taken. That seemed to be the only thing he did though. Ripped his shirt off and threw a few filing cabinets about. Disappointing.

I never liked the 60's Batman series either. I wanted it to be more serious. I'd probably laugh at it more now.

I used to like Dr Strange, and I always thought that would be a good film. A relative tells me that it too is disppointing. I don't want to watch it in case it is. It was on sky over the Christmas Hols.

It had so much potential. My brother and I used to watch it, and he even got the figure with the lifting arm thing and the telescopic eye that you could see through whilst making that di-di-di-di-di sound.

Great idea. Terrible script - though I've only formulated that thought today. At the time I was left feeling ... disappointed.

Come on now, Buck Rogers was something special!!

I missed the Buck Rodgers thing. A whole chunk of my TV history is missing in the 80s when I was perpetually out and probably at the pub - drowning my disappointment at Planet of the Apes on TV and - gah - Knight Rider.

That's true, who still doesn't do the "dunnnnnn duunnnnnn"

No, Arthur from The Tick cartoon, he was The Tick's sidekick. He was an accountant who wore a moth costume that being was always mistaken for a rabbit, that's him hovering above the the Tick in the picture. I remember that cartoon though, Paul. In fact, my brother and his family were actually in an episode of that which still boggles my mind a little bit. I have no idea how they came to the attention of the producers and then it's seems so weird that they would come all the way to ND and then there is the really odd thing...I've never seen it! My sons have but I never caught it. I should check youtube...

I have fond memories of Hong Kong Fooey but I don't remember Batfink. Shazam I loved...and Isis! But Great American Hero was on ABC and we didn't get ABC in my neck of the woods so I missed out on that one. Dark Wing Duck is another great superhero that is often overlooked.

Ok, it was actually a Postcards from Buster segment or spin off or whatever it was and the episode is called, Up The River but I couldn't find it on youtube.

107 Up the River (Mandan and Bismarck, North Dakota)

Following in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark, Buster takes a canoe trip with the Stensley family. Along the way they introduce him to the Norwegian music, language, and dance that make up their family traditions...

They spelled the name wrong but it is the right episode.
