Something for you moon shiners. Tomorrow night we will see the second full moon in the month of December known as a "Blue moon"
Hope the sky is clear wherever you find yourself tomorrow night, so be sure to take a moment to gaze at the moon.

I hope I can remember to gaze up tomorrow night. I wonder (pardon my ignorance)... does it really look blue?

blue moon (http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/blue-moon-years-eve/story?id=9448523)

I watched the moon while on our way to grandma's house for the annual year-end reunion. It wasn't blue at all, just the normal color. Still, a pretty sight to behold.

Max, Crystalmmonshin,

Great question. The moon can take on a blue hue depending on the amount and type of particulates and or moisture is suspended in the atmosphere. The atmosphere can alter the light producing a different color. For example you may have noticed a full moon just above the horizon tends to be “yellow” while it appears “silver” when directly overhead. The yellow is due to the fact that you are viewing the moon through a deeper layer of atmosphere across the surface of the earth. Once overhead, we are now looking through a thinner layer of atmosphere, therefore producing a “cleaner” view.

Following a brief jaunt through Wikipedia, I understand the term blue moon originally referred to something that was likely to never happen or was extremely rare. “Once in a blue moon, Texas will have a white Christmas”. Apparently the meaning has morphed over the years now describing a second full moon in one month or the additional (13th) moon in a calendar year.

It is overcast here, but may clear up by evening.

Here are a couple of random finds related to the moon:

An excerpt from Thiruppavai by Aandaal, a Tamil saint and one of the twelve Alvar saints and only woman Alvar saint of Vaaishnavism. (from Wikipedia)

“The full moon day of Margazhi is here
What an auspicious day it is!

O dear ornamented girls
who thrive in Brindavana,
overflowing with prosperity

Come along, let us go bathe,
Come along if you so desire.

Narayana --
The son of Nandagopa,
whose sharp spear is readily so cruel --
The young lion of Yashoda,
whose eyes are so full of love --
With dark body
red eyes
face like the sun and moon

Narayana alone
will give us
The drum!

So join us, so that the people
Of the world will celebrate.

“Silver”
by Walter de la Mare --

“Slowly, silently, now the moon
Walks the night in her silver shoon;
This way, and that, she peers, and sees
Silver fruit upon silver trees;
One by one the casements catch
Her beams beneath the silvery thatch;
Couched in his kennel, like a log,
With paws of silver sleeps the dog;
From their shadowy coat the white breasts peep
Of doves in a silver-feathered sleep;
A harvest mouse goes scampering by,
With silver claws, and silver eye;
And moveless fish in the water gleam,
By silver reeds in a silver stream.”

Dark Muse seems to be compiling poems related to the moon. Perhaps you can post this to her thread? It's in the Poems, Poets and Poetry section, if I'm not mistaken. :)

It's snowing/sleeting so the blue moon here is canceled. The next one is 2028.

Well, I guess we live in the same city so it must be the same here. :) What part of New York do you live Haunted? I live on Staten Island.

I could actually see it, as we have a clear sky on this side of the world. It had a similar aspect to the photo on the link that crystalmoonshin posted, though a lot brighter. Thank you Gilliatt for the abundant info you posted.

I live out east on Long Island; we usually have a whole different weather pattern here though.

Oh someone help! I was watching a movie and had the computer on sleep and when I woke it up everything is now gigantic...the type, icons, even pages are running over the size of the monitor. I checked the magnification setting and it's hasn't been altered. Anybody have any idea why my computer would do this. I am really worried. It's never happened to me before. I tried restarting but it still was oversize. Maybe this blue moon did something to my computer. But seriously, I need help! SOS help!

Janine, go to View on top of the internet window and try text size. Also on the lower right hand corner is the magnification. It should say 100%. What does it say?

Yes, you do. It's really only a drizzle here. It's lovely out there. Are you far from Montauk Point?

Not that close, about 1.5 hours away in summer traffic. I love going there in the summer. I don't care for the rest of the Hamptons that much, it's being taken over by celebs, but Montauk is just gorgeous and still belongs to us ;)

I can't find either of those. Do you have Vista. I have a lot of small icons which I can hover over and see what they are in the right-hand bottom corner on the bar. I have a few on the left too but none say type size or magnification. I just went and changed the screen resolution...somehow it was all the way to the left. I put it in the middle approximately and now the type is smaller than normal. Do you know what it should be set at..what numbers?

Janine

Well, I changed the screen resolution and the type looks clear and fine but the dimensions seem a bit off. For instance the avatars are not square and my photos look odd also. Something still is not right. What could have caused this to happen, seriously. Have I been moonbean struck?

The moon is not to be held accountable. It's the gremlins from the moon. They are the naughty folks that should be put to trial :lol:

Supposedly, there was a lunar eclipse in Europe last night but way too much clouds. I caught only a very fleeting glimpse of the full moon.

@Janine: Did you try the buttons on your monitor itself? There are different options you can adjust the monitor settings with, for elongation, and centering the display for example.

I think so. It was a blue moon, and being the second full moon in the month, werewolves doubled in number and went messing with your computer. It's day now, so hopefully your screen returned to normal.

I remember seeing the ball in Time Square looking kind of bluish this year. Could that be the blue moon? I had a couple of drinks so I'm not sure if I just imagined it.

Haha....very funny, Haunted...thanks for the advise. But my screen is still not quite normal...it's something fluky with the display and so far I haven't been able to figure it out; I even tried adjusting the monitor...that still doesn't do it. Anyone out there have the same problem ever and can help me to solve it? I finally gave up for the evening; I am just too tired tonight to try and adjust any more settings. Weird it happened in the first place.

I think the ball in Times Sq was bluish this year...it was not as it usually looks...which is more cystal and clear. Could they have been mimicing the blue moon by any chance? I didn't really see it come down; I guess we the happenings on Penn's Landing in Philly.

Happy New Year, Haunted! I didn't get around to sending out ecards this year....I am slipping...

Sit tight Janine, I'm getting some geek help for you from Nietzsche...

you can adjust dimensions in the menu options for the monitor I think, same as Lulim said

Janine, sounds like both Lulim and Nietzsche think it's a matter of adjusting the settings on your screen. Locate the buttons, they're usually on the front of your screen, and they're usually roundish, like the shape of a full moon....

I already talked to my friend on the phone, who knows computers/monitors and had this same monitor for a time and hated how one sets it; then I finally figured out how to get the menu's acessable and I did adjust it and it didn't do the trick. It keep 'reconfiguring'; but nothing significant changed. I am wanting to buy a new monitor; but I am not entirely sure this is the problem. I can get the settings almost right, but something is still off in the dimenisions....like photos look stretched out vertically; people look a thinner than normal, even on Youtube. I tried changing the vertical and horizontal settings to no avail...I admit I am poking around in the dark. I don't quite know what the setting should be for my wide screen monitor - it's a 19 or 20 inch one. I will try working on it tomorrow. It's really frustrating and I am too tired now to care at the moment. Thanks for commenting everyone and trying to help.
