Well I'm 16 and just picked up poetry late last month, so sorry if you think my poem isn't that good and such. I practice to get better every day.

The souls that are lost~

My heart hurts for you
Sorrow, empty and sad --
No longer praised with solace
Clearest of the life I once had.

The nights are eerie
Pain is my eyes that shed a million tears
Misery that aches my soul beneath the darkened skies--
Life dwelling to an end, the mournful years...

We are born unwanted, us with feathery fur
Hearts that cry, and still survive
To make it through life --
Dimmer pictures broaden, as many souls arrive.

I see them die under the midnight sky
In tiny pieces of sadness, one so far from love
The once furry beings, so cold and gone--
Now, that are soaring doves.

My pain is ceased, my suffering is gone
Time does not freeze for those who are lost
You find your soul crushed, as my tender purr stops --
Think of the ones that die, ones not given even a chance.

We wish for a caring soul in our forever sleep,
Many of us are unloved, and many strays--
Lives without meaning, born to suffer --
We know not security or love, us cast-a-ways.

Think of the felines that still live,
Throughout the night, many shall depart --
Go find another friend, and though our bond can’t be broken --
Make space for another feline in your heart.

It's clear to me that the deep sympathy you have for cats is a projection of the suffering you've experienced. From the evidence of this poem, you will go on to write other, equally good, equally strong ones!

Thank you.

Zach, when I was your age I was writing doggerel such as the following:
The sky is blue
And so am I
Because you left me
and said goodbye.

Your poem shows a control of emotion and expression which I find to be quite exceptional. Your poem moved me.
