What books have you been attracted to by their titles only? Before you knew anything about, or very little about, the book in question. I have felt compelled to read several books by their title only .... more as a young man. Of Human Bondage and The Moon and Sixpence by Somerset Maugham. Babbitt and Main Street by Sinclair Lewis. The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser. And the most compelling title of all: Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd. How many compelling titles can you name?

Here are a few that come to mind:
Never let me go, by Kazuo Ishiguro; Dreams of my Russian summers, by Andreï Makine (although the original title is very different); Ingenious pain, by Andrew Miller; The very rich hours of Count von Stauffenberg, by Paul West. Incidentally all of these turned out to be great books! :)

I was thinking of buying a x-mas present for myself, something written by Irvine Welsh and as I had no desire to read through reviews, to find out what is in each of his works, I chose by title.... so I opted for - If you liked school, you will love work. :p

Our library will buy audio books (CDs) if the requested title is something more than one or two people have requested. I'll have to see if they'll buy a few of these. It's a pretty good library system, but for some reason they don't have a single Thomas Pynchon. I'll request Lot 49, Gravity's Rainbow, and V. Last year, they bought at my request the Collector and the French Lieutenant's Woman. I'll try to get The Magus. They just got Blood Meridian and The Road so I'll be listening to these. On all modern books (those published after 1925), I prefer to save my eyes and listen (unabridged of course). Thanks for the titles!

All of these titles ended up working out pretty well for me.

Dream of the Red Mansions--- I had the feeling that it's an erotic novel, and it didn't disappoint with narrations of the licentiousness of many characters. (But what really made it a great favorite is the fact that it's also a tragic love story with touches of the supernatural, among others.)

Sonata de Otoño (Valle-Inclan)--- from the title itself, one can guess that it's got a tragic story.

The Perfumed Garden--- sounds erotic... and it IS!
