I'm considering it as a Christmas gift for someone... I don't know, guys.

In the past I have made mixtapes for people as Christmas presents. Whether or not they appreciate it as much as you'd want them to, at least you KNOW the amount of emotional effort that went into selecting the songs. In most cases, you'll find that if you're good at making them, that the person finds a lot of enjoyment from them.

It's an awesome gift if you KNOW the person's musical taste. I've never given, but I've received. Super awkward if the giver doesn't really know the receiver's taste because they expect to see it in the cd player or whatever and if they know it's not being listened to, they can get disappointed. But yes, as Mathor said, it's gotta be for someone who will appreciate how much work went into it and appreciate how well you know them.

Well, without wanting to appear too base, there was a time when giving a girl a mixtape was pretty much tantamount to a note reading,
"I'm too broke to take you out to dinner, but I can probably stretch to pizza in a box and wine at my place, with, like, maybe this music tape and stuff, so on the basis of, you know, that, which I'm aware is not a sweeping romantic gesture (but you've got to admit I'm trying) is there any chance at all of you allowing me to see, at some point, and obviously only if you're comfortable with it, at the very least, if it's not too much trouble, your tits, please?"
Which was a surprisingly effective strategy. So - yeah - I have.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH Best. Post. Ever.
That was DEFINITELY not the context in which the one I received was given.
You very well may be correct, so then it would depend on the context of the giving and who the giver is.

 And did it always work as expected?

And also on the context of the recipient
