View Full Version : Would You Pay For A Non-Free Litnet

With so many free sites turning to subscriptions, or trying to find ways to cash in via the internet, a lot of free sites are becoming non-free. If suddenly litnet forums charged 5-10 dollars a month to be a part of the forum (or a one-time fee) would you still use litnet?

this is just a hypothetical situation I thought I'd leave with you guys to see how much you value certain services and the "real" worth of these things.

I love lit net; but I am already paying for alot of internet services that I use sporadically. Plus, I think my attachment here has a great deal to do with a few friends; if they left, I don't know that I'd stay for bible discussions and shakespeare.

Depends. If it's only a small amount. I have some very good friends here whom I can always count on, so I would be willing to pay a bit. That said, my two most special friends I already talk to on facebook and msn, and the friends whom I don't talk to on those sites, I would certainly give them my username so that they can add me. So in the end it wouldn't be some epic loss, even though I admitingly prefer most of the people here than most of the ones I know in real life. Lit-Net means a lot to me but money's tight right now and I shouldn't use it on non-necessities.

Anyway, though I love our hard-working mods who without a doubt deserve pay, we lower forms mustn't put ideas into their heads :p

would depend, like a yearly thing I could do, or a one time thing. However my phone gets cut off every month, now they just call and remind me a week before its due, I'm horrible about remembering to pay things! Plus its such a hassle to pay something every month. It would suck, becuase some of our most treasured members might leave. right now the only factors that determin rather we stay or go, is time, internet and the computer. and for the last two their are librarys, phones ect. but the economy sucks right now, so Idk. I would, but I think a lot of people would let it go

*I do however think that their should be an option to donate to the site, or to the mods directly, for christmas ect.*

Oh no, more deprivation!

Who has any money these days?

Despite the fact that I LIVE for this "priceless"website, I could never pay for it. Even if I could, how would I get the dough to you? Put a piece of paper currency in the CD slot?

Lordy no! I do love Litnet, but I am barely scraping by with the things I have to pay for.

A couple of the other forums I frequent have a link to donate on the main page. Users who donate have a little "contributor" tag under their avatar and most of the regular users have donated to help keep the website afloat, and thanks to that system they rarely have any monetary issues.
Personally, I would choose that route over forcing every user to pay.

That ruins the whole idea of the forums though, as people will just end up abusing the system, and thinking because they "contribute" more their contributions mean more.

As it is, to be honest, I doubt I would pay for these forums - if it was pay to use, ultimately, the color would go out of them anyway.

No, I don't think I would pay. Like others have mentioned finances are tough at the moment. I wouldn't be able to comit to paying a fee all the time. So where would that leave me... Lit-less.

I voted no. If this was truely a literature forum I probably would, but give the garbage threads like legalizing prostitution and now creating the master race, I couldn't in good conscience contribute money toward it.

Maybe the idea behind eugenics or whatdoucallit is to engineer a master race that's wiling to pay for subscriptions so they can continue to have threads like legalizing prostitution, or infidelity is ok as long as the other person doesn't know about it, etc. etc. etc.

If we were to have our webiste, it'll be 100% free. Should we need funding, we wouldn't ask for a subscription. We would just go out and rob a bank.

We were discussing paying for LitNet, Mary:wave:

It would be a shame to spoil a very active site.

I've been on a "members only" site before and as people drifted away it became just the same few people saying the same things all the time. In a word: boring.

No, no, one can not have boring... We must keep litnet free.:banana::banana::banana::banana:

It makes sense, though it keeps the feeling of a literature forum. When a site is free access and grows immensely, it's hard to control the quality of every thread, I think.

Great point! :D

If I had the money and the sites I frequent were in real need of something like donations to keep going, then I would contribute. My economy right now is at the verge of an abyss and I already have many bills to pay monthly, but if I were in a better position, when being asked for help I would do whatever is possible.

If we had to pay, what would happen to the wonderful people with three posts: their short story, and two posts following, whining about people not critiquing....!? Heaven Forbid we weed them out!

I wouldn't pay for LitNet. I love the site dearly, but my use is sporadic, and mostly in the blogs. I'm often discouraged from discussion because so often it is just a wall of words, and the people can be incredibly nasty and rude.

No, I'm new here and my income is insufficient to allow for such luxuries as paid internet forums.
