hey there. since I read "the string of pearls" (in oreder to complete my research about sweeney todd when the film came out) I'm totally mad about penny bloods/dreadfuls and other victorian and gothic literatur. but without the tiles I can't order the books(and I just can't find more titles)... so if you know some and have read some please tell me the titles and what you think of them.. how you liked them and so on... thx!!

my favorite "penny dreadful" is Varney The Vampire (or The Feast of Blood) by either James Malcolm Rymer or Thomas Preskett Prest--there is a question of who actually wrote it. It was published in a series of pamplets from 1845 to 1847, and was published in book form in 1847. It is availiable for free on the net through Project Gutenberg. It's a hoot.

IŽm quite interested in Gothic novel, but I have read especially short stories. Indeed, there are several anthologies published by Penguin, Oxford and Wordsworth.

I write down some of them, hoping theyŽll be useful.

- M.R. JAMES, Collected ghost stories, Wordsworth.
- Classic Victorian and Edwardian Ghost Stories, Wordsworth.
- Gothic Short Stories, Wordsworth.
- ELIZABETH GASKELL, Gothic tales, Penguin.

Greetings!

haha then in case you want to know everything about Gothic novel, the only thing I can tell you is that you should read about it in Wikipedia ;) there youŽll find a lot of titles and writers. At least it helped me a lot when I was looking for new readings. And of course, try with Google, searching "Gothic novel"...

Have you tried sensation novels like M.E Braddon (published her most penny dreadful type novels under the name of Babington White or anonymously. Titles like Circe, and The Octoroon, The Black Band but most of them are out of print but you can find some online), or Wilkie Collins?

I'm expectingly interested in such with good on page notes to explain the context. by the way special thx to Jermac for telling me about this Gutenberg project thing (now I only need to find a way to print Verney.. ;))
