There is a resident shmuck
in everyone’s life. He
or she is there to provide a standard
we can hardly fail to exceed.

If we blow a relationship,
our Resident Shmuck
has blown at least two or three.

If we handle our finances badly
Mr, or Ms. Shmuck
is there with his or her hand out.

But what if, oh, what if
we are the shmucks
in someone else’s life?

A bittersweet poem, made me chuckle at first, and the last stanza....made my eyes as big as meatballs.
You've done it again, Jer. :)

I think most everyone has their "scmucky" moments in life. As usual this is a wonderful piece Prince in its subtle rhythms and potent ending.

Agreed, there is a simple sort of cleverness here, made me sort of think of Mark Twain.

An insightful poem. Your usually skill at perceiving our common humanity.

Yes, I'm feeling kind of schmucky at the moment! :)

Oh? 'Scuse me for dissenting but I think you'd need to register for an undergrad course in the subject before you'd be capable of out and out shmuckiness! Have you read your latest blog entry with its fine account of your thanksgiving dinner?

Half my life I'm a schmuck, the other half a schlemiel.
Six of one, half dozen of another.

Six of one, half dozen of another.

I hate to step on your Yiddish, but shouldn't that be "half a dozen of one, five of the other"?
