It's that time of year again! That time of year in which you find your special friend, eggnog sitting next to the milk in the dairy sectoin.

Eggnog is loved and cherished by many, though sadly, there is a section of the population consisting of radical extremists who despise and denounce this heavenly substance.

As debates rage on throughout the forums concerning the moral dilema of infidelity, or the decreasing quality of films, or the stature of Thomas Mann as a writer, there is an equally important issue at hand, which need be no longer neglected. Eggnog; either you're with it or you're against it.

Would you believe I've never had egg nog until a few years ago? My family were never egg nog people and my Mom claims to this day to hate the stuff but can't remember ever trying it.

I'm with it.

I'm against it. Nasty stuff. Thanks for keeping it real, Daniel!

So-so. You have no middle option. It's ok, but I wouldn't go out of my way. So it's not either your with it or against it. :p

I love eggnog. In my early twenties I drank eggnog, like water... So much so that it almost made me ill. And yet I still drink it. Yum.

I have nothing against it other than that it makes me want to vomit up everything I've ever eaten.

More for you.

eggnog is my one true love. I will buy two cartons and drink on in the parking lot of the grocery store. You know how the check out lady will offer to leave your gum out? I keep one of the eggnogs out. I love eggnog, I love it. So think and tasty-mmmm...

Its not really a British thing... so I don't think I've ever had it.

Can I just say though that the appearance of a Christmas-related thread has really depressed me. Bah, humbug!

Eggnog is not just for Christmas! I think it goes really well with any occasion, like today for example. Eggnog would go really great with today. I'm going to call my husband and let him know that I need him to stop on the way home.

What is up with this? First rimbaud now you? Am I just a sentimentalist or does anybody else love Christmas?

I go back and forth. When I was a little kid, I drank it like water, then I went through a phase where I almost puked every time I had it and couldn't stand the stuff. In a pro-eggnog phase right now, though.

I love Christmas, but it's not anywhere close to Christmas yet! Since when does the beginning of November count as the holiday season?

Oh, you don't live in Melb. Australia, they have filled the shops up with Christmas gear already, actually some of the shops I have visited had stocks on their shelves by the first week of October. It's madness.

Some British shops go even earlier. Most card/gift retailers have been selling their tat since late August.

I even read in the local paper that one of the high street chains in Chester, my nearest city, got complained at for setting up their Christmas display in mid-July.

I love the day (for the most part), but I DETEST the run up. The Christmas period begins on Christmas Eve, and not one moment before.

:santasmil Christmas isn't Christmas without Eggnog, chestnuts and fruitcake. Eggnog and fruitcake are nothing without tons of liquor in both:lol:

Truthfully I actually avoid the shops in the last month of the year. I usually go gift shopping in mid November and then spend the next month grocery shopping locally. Avoiding all big shopping plazas or malls as I don't take well to crouds. Worst of all, are those big sales in January and the shoppers physically knock you down to get an item. :eek2:

I would rather be broke by paying an extra dollar than put up with all the commotion. :(

I hate shopping. I don't even like to get groceries. It's a shame that shopping has ruined what would otherwise be a lovely day.

I DESPISE Christmas, passionately. A mutual hatred of Christmas is what brought my boyfriend of three years and myself together, as a matter of fact. Christmas has been spent drunk out of my mind for the last three years. I plan to continue the tradition this year. =) And Eggnog is an integral part of it. I love Eggnog. I wish they sold it year round.

Actually, I might like it purely because the french translation is 'chicken milk'.

Well I never even mentioned Christmas in my original post. I've always remembered having eggnog in November and on Thanksgiving.

What's eggnog???

Since no one has answered Lulim's question properly, I'll ask it again: What's eggnog, please?

Before the salmonella scare, I used to make my own eggy drink by whipping up a raw egg in milk with a teaspoon of honey. It was reviving and sustaining and just plain yummy. But since the scare I've been a little tentative about eating/drinking anything with raw eggs, even though they assure us it's safe now.

I used to like Advocaat - I even liked Snowballs () - but only if they were made with American Dry Ginger Ale - so maybe I would like this eggnog of which you speak?

Well I didn't ask but I used a modern tool called Google. It's on Wikipedia, I closed the link now or I would have linked it.

Never heard of it before this thread.

And Christmas is annoying and every year I wish I could fall asleep on 15th December and wake up on 15th January. Except that nowadays Xmas is around since September. Seriously, some shops had Xmas stuff the last week of September, I went back to a shop to buy some shoes I had seen a couple of weeks earlier and I really wanted them, and the whole floor was Xmas shop...shoes were in a corner downstairs, waiting to be get rid of as they were 20% off :D At least something useful came out of starting with Xmas stupidly early.

Do people really buy Xmas stuff before it's December? I buy presents when I see them, so say it's August and I see something a friend of mine would like, I buy it and if I can I keep it for the next occasion, birthday or Xmas, whichever comes first. I only started buying presents since living abroad, cos my family doesn't really do presents but because I'm away I feel it's nice to bring something to close family and close friends, like I had been on holiday lol.

*whistling "Jingle Bells"* Oh, Daniel, how nice of you to start this thread. I was just sitting down to my favorite chair in my man-cave, about ready to sip from my tumbler filled with tasty eggnog when I came upon this post.

Cheers!

Thanks for the hint, I'm familiar with Wikipedia, however -- only thought it would be nicer to read an explanation by some passionate user -- or the opposite :)

I have tried that, too, but I can't stand the tension of keeping it secret and give the presents as I buy them.

Motherhubbard enlightened me about eggnogg (thanks for that :) ) -- something spicy like our Glühwein, but on a more milky/eggy basis (if I may call it so) as opposesd to Glühwein, which is on a basis of wine -- and contains always alcohol while with eggnog the addition of alcohol seems to be an option.

Ahhh Eggnog! I love it especially with a little brandy to spice it up. Normally, my husband and I only drink it while putting up our Christmas tree. This is to prevent each other from killing the other while stringing the lights. LOL
It is a nice relaxing drink during the holidays. I don't think we can buy it any other time of the year. Of course, you can make it from scratch if you wanted to.

For the novice, the key to doing eggnog is to go straight for the alcoholic version. The first 2 sips is crucial. After that you wouldn't notice as much how repulsive it is. And if you can finish the whole thing, you'll even think it's the best drink you've ever had with your clothes on.
