I would like to start a Newbery book club starting in December. We could read one Newbery book and discuss it each month. It would be enjoyable for any member, but particularly appropriate for our younger set as well as any educators we have in the forum. These are great books. Please let me know if you are interested and which book you would like to start with.

I have only read 12 of these books which leaves 52. Does anyone have a suggestion for December?

I would be interested too. I started the Graveyard Book, but didn't finish, only because I had a few others started too. What I read was very good.
I was hoping to get back to it.

That sounds great! I won't be able to start until December. I'm going to sign my 10 year old up. I think she will enjoy a good book discussion.

I was thinking we could either start with the most recent winner or literally read the winner from each year starting with The Story of Mankind by Hendrik William Van Loon who won in 1922, followed by the winner in 1923 in January, the winner of 1924 in February, etc. If we are reading one book a month eventually we would catch up with the most recent titles.

However, I wouldn't mind starting with the most recent winner as I actually already own a copy of Neil Gaiman's Graveyard Book, and it sounds like everyone else who wants to participate already does as well. So it might be the most convenient for everyone, especially for the first title. If we do that, then are we going to go backwards? Graveyard Book in December, Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village by Laura Amy Schlitz in January?, etc.

Should we include Newbery Honor books as possible selections or only winners? Maybe start with winners first, and if we run out of titles, which would take years anyway, then make that decision?

It would take years to run out of winners. I think there have been 64. I would like to start from the most recent. Going in order is good with me.

The Newberry Honor books are good as well and in some instances may even be better.

I would like to read The Graveyard Book, but I do not know if I will have a copy of it by December. I would be interested in partaking based upon if I am able to get a hold of the books for the discussions, but I will try to participate when I can.
